Abstract
It is fundamental to have a positive relationship and proximity between the school and the family. Family participation in school activities is essential in student training and contributes to student motivation and interest in school tasks. This ratio is still below what is desirable. The present research aims to investigate and understand the effects of the various modes of involvement and participation of parents and guardians in the teaching-learning process of the students of the course of Computer Systems Management, in the School of Mission of the Parish of Santo Estevão, BG-1024, in Benguela, Angola. The study follows the methodology of Research-Action and Case Study because its main theme focuses on the type of involvement between families and the school, and its impact on the teaching-learning process in a specific context. Various questionnaires were used as data collection instruments. For the students, three types of questionnaires were used: "causes of school failure", "students’ time orientation (functioning of motivation) "and "parents' educational style". The questionnaire "causes of school failure" was also addressed to parents and caregivers, teachers and school heads. In addition to the questionnaire the teachers had a class observation guide followed by an interview at the end of the class, and a questionnaire on sociodemographic data and special schooling issues to the directors. The analysis of the results allowed us to conclude that there are discrepancies in the perceptions of the causes of school failure. Discrepancies demonstrate a tendency for each group of subjects to disengage themselves and to consider that the deficits, insufficiency and deficiencies of the "others" are the determinants of failure. To sum up, each group considers that the "others" will have to change, thus revealing a low capacity for self criticism and understanding of complementary perspectives that could guide an awareness of the need for strategic change with personal and joint action.
