Abstract
The opening of the railway in the city of Barcelos, in 1877, led to the establishment of several factories, mainly from the textile industry, due to the easy access to raw materials and better flow of finished goods. One of these factories was Tor, founded in the mid-40`s of the last century and with the aim of manufacturing knitwear and similar products. This main factory, shortly afterwards, was designated mother TOR, since it facilitated many of its production to other existing factories in the city of Barcelos, these other factorties being denominated TOR`s daughters. The factory is located in Arcozelo, Santa Marta. An area where multi-family apartment blocks with an average height of 7 floors predominate, 250m from the city centre. The factory complex consists of 6 main pavilions intended for manufacturing and several small buildings intended to support the main activity. After the closure, the building was not used again, which led to the degradation of the buildings that were part of the factory complex, as well as its surroundings, which represents a threat to the industrial heritage of the city. Through this investigation it was possible to design a new function for the TOR Factory, in Barcelos, proposing its rehabilitation: a multifunctional building. The choice of this building made it possible to establish a program with a multitude of aspects, capable of encompassing different age groups, in order to guarantee the use of this building.
