Abstract
The Internet is a powerful tool that allows access to a wide variety of information, services and resources, including email, instant messaging, social networks, streaming platforms and video games, which, due to the increasing democratization of the internet and the New Live Stream platforms have attracted more and more individuals to the current video game market, which has led to an increase in players. The main objective of the present study was to verify the relationship between psycho-emotional variables such as depression, self-esteem and self-control and the use of the internet in young people attending higher education. We also sought to verify whether there were significant differences regarding the use of the internet in relation to gender, age, being a student worker or not and the length of time using the internet. The Internet Addiction Test (IAT), a Self-Control Scale, the Rosenberg Global Self-Esteem Scale and the Beck Depression Inventory were used. The sample consisted of 252 individuals, attending the first year of higher education, aged between 17 and 50 years old, with an average age of 20 years old. The study achieved the proposed objectives, having found statistically significant differences in the use of the internet in relation to age, being a student worker or not and the length of time using the internet, as well as statistically significant differences being found between the use of the internet and depressive symptoms, self-esteem and self-control. This study makes important contributions, as it complements data that is still scarce in studies on the relationship between psycho-emotional variables and internet use, particularly among young people attending higher education in Portugal.
