Abstract
Due to the significant changes that have occurred in families, more and more grandmothers have taken on the role of grandchildren's caregivers. Thus, the study of great parenting and its effects is of particular importance. The present study aims to characterize the practice of great parenting in a sample of Portuguese grandparents with at least one grandchild aged between 10 and 16 years old, as well as to evaluate the influence of the practice of great parenting grandparents' psychological well-being. In order to carry out this empirical study, an investigation protocol was used, consisting of a sociodemographic questionnaire, with questions of characterization of the care provided by grandparents to their grandchildren, and by validated scales for the Portuguese population that allow to assess the meanings of great parenting, the indicators of wellbeing and satisfaction with life. Data collection was carried out through snowball distribution, having been answered, to the set of questionnaires, 105 grandparents living in the north of Portugal, with an average age of 66.60 years (DP = 8.13), and grandchildren with an average age of 12.84 years (DP = 2.10). It was found that mutual understanding, link to the past and the caregiver dimension are associated with higher levels of psychological well-being in grandparents, although the role of mutual understanding is also associated with high levels of anxiety and stress in grandparents. Overall, the results show that the grandparent-grandchildren relationship is beneficial for the grandparents' psychological well-being. These results and their respective implications are discussed.
