Abstract
no Chile.
fases do estudo.
The study is part of a broader research project entitled “Collaborative learning and professional development of teachers: a case study in a public school”, which includes eight case studies in public and private schools/groupings in Portugal and Chile. It was selected a main public school of the grouping, with 60 years of history and a strong reference to the economic, social and cultural development of the city. The school is in Minho, north of Portugal. It is the former high school and the first industrial and commercial of the county. The school covers two major teaching cycles: Third cycle and regular and professional secondary. The participants of the study are teachers (N = 160) and are distributed through different departments of teaching disciplines. The case study was the research methodology implemented and developed following a qualitative treatment. The results are aimed at: understanding the way teachers describe and the formal and informal opportunities for sharing and what effects they have on practical knowledge; to know the facilitating and inhibiting and elements of collaborative professional learning; understand the role of teachers’ evaluation and students’ school outcomes as professional learning; and analyze the way teachers from different disciplines, years of experience and type of establishment prospect their professional learning. The data collection method involved the survey by questionnaire and eight semistructured interviews with teachers with management and coordination functions. Ethical procedures were considered in the different phases of study. The main results point to the recognition of the need to rethink teaching and the learning practices and, consequently, the passage of an installed school culture based on traditional models, to a culture of openness and work promote professional development. In this sense, teachers reveal the difficulty in finding adequate training for reality and personal interest. The challenge is to make the school a happy workplace for all, with quality and promoting students the ability to became active citizens. The greatest difficulties are the adaptation: the rapid changes; the normative standards required by law and the need to balance individual work with collaborative work.
