Abstract
trabalho saudáveis e equilibrados, onde as relações humanas e profissionais transmitem
There is a strong emotional component in the work of oncology. Health professionals working in this field deal daily with patients in a fragile physical and emotional state, as well as with families in need of information and emotional support. The present study sought to understand how emotions related to work are experienced by these health professionals, exploring their experience of emotional work. Through interviews with eight professionals, it was intended to investigate the emotional management strategies used by these professionals and how they respond to the existing display rules in their work context. Thus, a semi-structured interview script was developed based on the literature in order to explore the following domains of experience: i) the work routine of these professionals, as well as the quality of existing relationships with their peers; ii) emotional management by professionals, including the experience of emotional work by health professionals, the rewards and challenges identified by them in relation to this management, coping strategies used and perceived gender differences in emotional management; and finally; iii) the professionals' perspective regarding the management of their workplace. The content analysis of the interviews showed that despite the daily contact with oncological disease and all the personal, emotional and professional challenges inherent to the high emotional load of the work developed, there are healthy and balanced work environments where human and professionals transmit safety and well-being, which overcome the occasional conflicts, contributing to the quality of life and work of these professionals. However, the professionals identified signs of tiredness and the use of different emotional work strategies in their daily lives. The discussion of these results analyzes the importance of the future implementation of interventions that contribute to a greater support to the work performed by these professionals, given the high emotional load to which they are subject in this profession, thus allowing an improvement in the service provided to the user, who will undoubtedly prove an asset.
