Abstract
Involvement in extracurricular activities (EAs) is a fundamental support for the positive development of adolescents, including dimensions such as the extent, intensity, and duration of the EAs practiced by each one. The general objectives of this study are to: identify profiles based on the dimensions of involvement in EAs, in a sample of primary and secondary school students; to relate these clusters to sociodemographic and school variables, such as both the parents' educational background and students’ year of schooling; and to analyze these groups in terms of positive development variables, such as well-being, career engagement, and academic success. The study included 467 adolescents of both sexes (44.8% boys, 54.3% girls), aged between 12 and 19 (M = 15.13, SD = 1.31). The cluster analysis identified four profiles: "High involvement in EAs", "Moderate involvement in EAs", "Low involvement in EAs" and "No involvement in EAs". The clusters differ significantly in the variables under study, namely well-being, career engagement, and academic success. Overall, the clusters with a greater involvement in EAs, obtained higher results in the studied variables. These results support the usefulness of examining EAs involvement profiles in an integrated way, with practical implications at the psychoeducational, school, and family levels.
