Abstract
Culture has a great influence in the way individuals conceptualize competition and, consequently, how they experience it. Although the acculturation process has been focus of attention over time by Transcultural Psychology, little is known about the experience of competition during a migratory process, its cultural idiosyncrasies and its influence on immigrant’s integration and adaptation to the host society, objectives of the present study. To the accomplishment of these objectives, a qualitative study was carried out, involving 40 Brazilian immigrants (20 residents in Hungary and 20 residents in Portugal), to whom a semi-structured interview was applied, whose content was transcribed and analysed according to the criteria of Bardin (1977). The obtained results showed the variability of immigrants’ representations about competition, to which is attributed a positive and / or negative value, or are associated personal behaviours and concepts such as envy or persistence and determination. Most of the participants identified the society of origin as more competitive than the host society, preferring the society that has a less competitive climate, and recognize the predominantly negative influence of competition in the process of integration and adaptation to the host society. Findings of this study suggest and reinforce previous empirical evidence according to which competition is a multidimensional and multidetermined phenomenon, namely by the cultural context in which the individuals are inserted, and determinant for immigrant’s integration and adaptation during the migratory process, influencing their health and wellbeing.
