Abstract
A Business Intelligence (BI) system combines tools and techniques that, supported by technology, allow to use the data generated by an organization in order to extract relevant information that supports decision making. Higher Education Institutions (HEI) may benefit from the use of BI systems in several aspects, in addition to administrative management, namely in the analysis of students' academic performance. This work aims to address the use of BI systems in Higher Education (HE) that are focused on the monitoring and analysis of academic performance and demonstrate the various stages of their implementation and associated challenges, as well as their added value. A proof of concept is presented for the application of BI in a private Portuguese HEI, which analyzes the characteristics of students enrolled in various study programmers and determines the influence of different factors on the academic success of students. These factors include data related to the academic training of students before joining the HEI and sociodemographic data that will be cross-referenced with information on the performance of students throughout and at the conclusion of the study programme at HEI. The underlying idea will be to support the education quality assurance process, suggesting improvements for both the training process and offer. With the knowledge obtained, the HEI will be able to more easily design a differentiating strategy for the enrolled students, taking into account their respective profiles and evidenced needs, improving the communication of the training offer and creating opportunities at curricular and extracurricular level, as well as providing project initiatives adapted to the various segments of students.
