Publication Open Access A traditional school towards a new dimension: social learning.2013 - Seruca, Isabel; Ferreira, Maria João; Moreira, FernandoSchools have suffered a large (r)evolution at social, economic and technological levels, particularly during the last 10 years, when traditional barriers of transferring information and knowledge silos have been progressively eliminated. Finding experts and knowledge within a school is now easier through Social Learning. A change of paradigm in day-to-day use of information systems and technologies (IST) by students does not sustain such a transformation by itself, however. A change of culture and behavior is also necessary. The appropriate use of IST integrated with the school's processes will depend on both individual and collective efforts, that is, on what may be called "collective leadership". The younger generation is accustomed to sharing, often through mobile devices (MDs), personal information on Facebook, and Twitter, among other platforms, and enters the job market looking for similar tools. These new "social tools" eliminate the barriers of communication and sharing, allowing the production, sharing, and management of information and knowledge within the school between peers and other stakeholders. We believe that Social Learning is much more than just collaboration and sharing, since the IST that is currently available, by itself, allows the school processes to be more dynamic, more "social". These developments, along with the European Commission report "A Roadmap for Advanced Cloud Technologies H2020 under...", imply that the environment of IST (market research, education, etc.) is constantly changing. It is necessary to identify the major changes that can be expected in the next 5-10 years that may affect the IST environment. It is expected, for example, that in 2015 the concept "Bring your own Device" (BYOD) as well as the use of Cloud Computing will be practically general. Taking advantage of these technologies for teaching students through Social Learning, in particular nomadic students, requires a comprehension exercise in how to demonstrate its usefulness with regard to the creation, access and sharing of targeted and safe content. We propose a concept associated with mobile learning, called Create, Share, Document and Teach (m_CSDT). Structured and organized Social Learning, with different ISTs including MDs that comply with the concept m_CSDT will contribute in a particular way to the well-being of the school through the intelligence and agility dimensions. We believe that the intelligence dimension, on its different indicators, is achieved through "collective leadership", since this one is more efficient than hierarchic management, for certain types of tasks, allowing the internal relations of cooperation to increase and improve the flow of knowledge. This because broad participation is usually more effective and leads to more information that can be processed and used in decision-making. The agility dimension is achieved through collaborative work supported mainly by nomadic students, allowing a systemic perception, especially taking advantage of the interconnections between the school's capabilities and learning with IST's opportunities. This research intends to provide a comprehensive view of a new dimension in the traditional schools, i.e. social learning supported by mobile IST – m_CSDT – in order to improve their well-being through the intelligence and agility dimension.Publication Open Access FCASM2T: The tools and functionalities / Features identification process2015 - Ferreira, Maria João; Seruca, Isabel; Moreira, FernandoThe huge popularity and evolution of the Web in the last decade, and the rapid advances in ICT allowed an exponential growth of the volume and diversity of data produced by social media. The widespread use of social media has encouraged citizens to give their opinions more freely and actively participate in several aspects of modern life. The data provided in this context can have a great impact on business, where often opinions of customers may contribute to the success of a product or service, or destroy the reputation of a brand or a company. The effective and full use of social media by organizations require that they are able to monitor and analyse the high volumes of heterogeneous data that are produced by these media, so as to obtain relevant information and valuable insights for decision making and for conducting their business. Due to the diversity of social media monitoring tools available and wide range of features offered, the FCASM2T (Framework for classification and adoption of social media monitoring tools) was proposed to classify and guide the process of adoption of such a tool (or set of tools) by an organization. This paper addresses the first stage of the framework, the Tools and functionalities/features identification process, describing its rationale and way-of-working.Publication Open Access Enterprise 4.0: The emerging digital transformed enterprise?2018 - Ferreira, Maria João; Seruca, Isabel; Moreira, FernandoInformation Systems are at the core of all businesses and cover almost all aspects of organizational life. The convergence of computer capabilities, such as the potential to process large volumes of data in a very short time, the growth in Internet usage and the increase in the ability to capture and leverage knowledge in digital format are, in this context, the main enablers of the so called digital transformation of organizations. While the technology enablers allow the production, sharing and management of information and knowledge within the organization between peers and other stakeholders, besides empowering the improvement and innovation of the organizational processes, they also require the updating of the supporting IS. Thus, using technologies in organizations within the context of Digital Transformation (DT) requires an exercise in understanding how to demonstrate their usefulness in relation to the creation, access and sharing of contents and IS improvements in a safe way. This paper provides a comprehensive view of a new context of labour faced within DT of organizations, which we term Enterprise 4.0 and which we propose to be implemented through the m_CSDIT framework, so as to improve the organizational well-being considering the collective intelligence and agility dimensions.Publication Open Access Sales prediction for a pharmaceutical distribution company: a data mining based approach | Previsão de vendas numa empresa de distribuição farmacêutica: uma aproximação baseada em data mining2016 - Ribeiro, Augusto; Durão, Natércia; Seruca, IsabelFor pharmaceutical distribution companies it is essential to obtain good estimates of medicine needs, due to the short shelf life of many medicines and the need to control stock levels, so as to avoid excessive inventory costs while guaranteeing customer demand satisfaction, and thus decreasing the possibility of loss of customers due to stock outages. In this paper we explore the use of the time series data mining technique for the sales prediction of individual products of a pharmaceutical distribution company in Portugal. Through data mining techniques, the historical data of product sales are analyzed to detect patterns and make predictions based on the experience contained in the data. The results obtained with the technique as well as with the proposed method suggest that the performed modelling may be considered appropriate for the short term product sales prediction.Publication Open Access Towards a framework for classification and adoption of social media monitoring tools2015-07-09 - Ferreira, Maria João; Seruca, Isabel; Moreira, FernandoThe huge popularity and evolution of the Web in the last decade, and the rapid advances in ICT allowed an exponential growth of the volume and diversity of data produced by social media. Social media tools represent a subset of these technologies that contribute to digital transformation (DT) of organizations and which are already used within organizational training contexts. However, the adoption of social media tools, by itself, does not guarantee such a transformation; changes in the organization’s culture and behaviour are also needed. Taking advantage of the DT technology enablers and realising the need for updated approaches to address organizational workers’ training, we propose a model to guide organizational training within DT. The model, called Training of Organizational Workers (ToOW), addresses the 2nd layer of the mobile Create, Share, Document and Training (m_CSDT) framework formerly described. The advantages foreseen for the model usage are twofold. On the one hand, the model acknowledges the crucial role that an organization plays in promoting a culture of continuous learning/training of its employees; on the other hand, the model provides guidance on setting up the training strategies and activities, as well as on the monitoring of training results achieved, whichare measured according to the performance metrics considered within the organizational strategy.Publication Open Access Social business: a new dimension for education and training in organizations: the EToW Model2014 - Moreira, Fernando; Ferreira, Maria João; Seruca, IsabelOrganizations have suffered a large (r)evolution at the social, economic and technological levels. A change of paradigm in what comes to information systems and technologies (IST) used in the day-to-day life of every citizen, by itself, does not sustain such a transformation; it is therefore necessary a change of culture and behaviour. The use of IST in an appropriate and integrated way with the organization's processes will depend on an individual and collective effort. These social tools allow the production, sharing and management of information and knowledge within the organization between peers and other stakeholders, eliminating the barriers of communication and sharing. Taking advantage of these technologies for the education and training of organization’ employees within the context of Social Business, in particular concerning nomadic workers, requires a comprehension exercise in how to demonstrate their usefulness with regard to the creation, access and sharing of contents in a safe way. While these technologies have been around for some time, their adoption is behind overall expectations, particularly in the case of Enterprises. This paper discusses the challenges faced in implementing Semantic Web technologies in Enterprises and proposes an Implementation Model that measures and facilitates that implementation. The advantages of using the model proposed are two-fold: the model serves as a guide for driving the implementation of the Semantic Web as well as it helps to evaluate the impact of the introduction of the technology.
