Abstract
A amostra incluiu 131 estudantes universitários (18-32 anos; M=21.37; DP=2.28).
The literature has suggested that awareness of internal bodily signs plays an important role in psychological adjustment, facilitating processes such as emotional self-regulation and function as a protective factor against psychological distress. In this context, understanding the psychological mechanisms underlying this relationship becomes crucial. The present cross-sectional study explored the indirect effect of emotional regulation difficulties on distress and self-esteem through interoceptive awareness. The sample included 131 university students (aged 18-32 years; M=21.37; SD=2.28). Participants completed an online questionnaire comprising instruments such as Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale - Short Form, Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale – 21, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The results indicated that interoceptive awareness mediates the relationship between emotional regulation difficulties and self-esteem in university students. A direct effect was also found between emotional regulation difficulties and depressive symptoms reported by students, with no evidence of mediation by interoceptive awareness. This study contributes to the literature by reinforcing the importance of investigating interoceptive awareness as a multidimensional construct, exploring mechanisms that may promote mental health outcomes in non-clinical populations.
