Everyday Memory Questionnaire-Revised (EMQ-R): Psychometric Validation of the European Portuguese Version in Non-Clinical Sample
2025-02-27 - Ribeiro, Bruna; López-Higes, Ramón; Rubio-Valdehita, Susana; Caetano, Ana Paula; Rodrigues, Pedro F. S.; Bártolo, Ana; Fernandes, Sara M.
The present study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and present a psychometric validation for the Everyday Memory Questionnaire—Revised (EMQ-R) to the Portuguese population. The study involved 267 participants aged between 18 and 75 years (M = 39.32; SD = 14.8), recruited online. Self-report measures of anxiety and depression symptoms were administered to assess the instrument’s convergent validity. To examine the factorial structure of the measure, a two-step validation process was employed. Given the uncertainty about the optimal measurement model, the sample was randomly divided into two independent subsamples. First, a principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted to explore the factorial structure. Next, a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to validate the identified structure. The results supported a unidimensional structure consisting of 12 items, suggesting that perceived memory difficulties are best represented as a single overarching factor. High reliability was observed for this structure (Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega values ≥ 0.90). The results also indicated that general memory complaints were moderately correlated with symptoms of anxiety and depression. Furthermore, the study highlighted the promising potential of the measure as a screening tool for detecting subjective memory complaints, with an optimal cut-off score of 16 points. Future studies should focus on validating the EMQ-R with clinical samples, exploring its discriminative ability, and examining the stability of the cut-off score across different populations and contexts.

Reliability and factor structure of the 10-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) among Portuguese adults
2019 - Pereira, Anabela; Monteiro, Sara; Oliveira, Carla Andreia; Jardim, Jacinto; Bártolo, Ana; Vagos, Paula
The 10-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) has been presented as a valid measure to assess psychological distress levels in population surveys but its dimensional structure was not consensual. Our main objective was to provide a Portuguese version of the K10 exploring the reliability and factor structure of this measure. This cross-sectional study included 694 adults collecteda web-based survey and in training entities. Results showed that 37.9% of the individuals reported significant distress symptoms. A good internal consistency of the K10 scale (α=.91) and strong inter-item correlation (ranges350 to .659) were found in our study but the original one-dimensional structure was not confirmed. A two-factor model considering anxiety and depression as two latent, independent but correlated factors shows a good fit with the data even across two data collection methods. The K10 tool was sensitive to sociodemographic variables. Participants aged 40 or over and belonging to the general working class presented higher distress levels. Our data indicates the Portuguese version of K10 as a reliable tool with a factor structure to assess psychological distress.

Intervention programs targeting burnout in health professionals: A systematic review
2024-05-01 - Araújo, Diana; Fernandes, Cláudia; Pereira, Anabela; Monteiro, Sara; Bártolo, Ana
Background: Burnout is an occupational syndrome, with a higher prevalence in professionals whose close involvement with other people is significant. There is a great diversity of professionals at risk of burnout, and therefore the implementation of intervention programs is relevant, as helping people to maintain their mental and emotional health enables them to become more meaningfully involved in their communities and become more effective and active global citizens. We aimed to review systematically the characteristics of interventions targeting burnout in health professionals. Methods: The search was conducted in three databases: Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed, following the PRISMA model, and 16 eligible articles were identified between 2012 and 2023. Results: Mindfulness showed great efficacy in preventing burnout, by reducing stress levels and promoting empathy. In addition, relaxation and breathing techniques, yoga, and music therapy showed to improve burnout and occupational stress levels. Balint groups have also helped slow the progression of burnout. Implications about the need for future research to foster the promotion of well-being and mental health of health professionals are mentioned. Conclusion: Mindfulness, relaxation and breathing techniques, yoga, music therapy and balint groups proved to be effective in preventing burnout.

Programas de reabilitação cognitiva no cancro: Barreiras e facilitadores [abstract]
2024-01-31 - Oliveira, Ana Filipa; Torres, Ana; Loureiro, Liliana; Santos, Isabel M.; Bártolo, Ana

Development and psychometric testing of the acceptability regarding cognitive rehabilitation interventions survey: Cancer survivors (ACRIS-CS) [abstract]
2024-08-27 - Oliveira, Ana Filipa; Loureiro, L.; Santos, Isabel M.; Torres, Ana; Bártolo, Ana
Introduction: Cognitive rehabilitation interventions (CRIs) for cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) have shown promis ing results. However, the acceptability of CRIs in the context of CRCItreatment has not yet been assessed among cancer survivors. Due to the absence of suitable instruments designed to assess the acceptability of CRIs in this population, we developed the Accept ability regarding Cognitive Rehabilitation Interventions Survey for Cancer Survivors (ACRIS-CS). Objectives: This study aimed to develop and test the psychometric properties of the newly created instrument, ACRIS-CS. Methods: The study was conducted in two stages: (1) the creation of scale items derived from a comprehensive literature review, considering the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability (TFA); and (2) the assessment of the scale’s psychometric properties with cancer survivors. At the end of stage 1, the questionnaire was revised by four clinicians and researchers with expertise in the field of CRCI, and the final item selection was determined by the authors, considering redundancy, item relevance, and face validity. The final scale comprised 11 items, answered on a 5-point Likert scale (ranging from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree”). Higher scores indicated more positive perceptions related to the accept ability of CRIs. Data were collected online and analyzed using IBM SPSSStatistics (version 28.0). Construct validity (exploratory factor analysis, EFA) and reliability (internal consistency) analyses were performed. Results: In this study, 154 cancer survivors were included. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measure of 0.847 confirmed the adequacy of sampling (KMO>0.5), and Bartlett’s test of sphericity yielded statistical significance (Χ² (55) = 864.431, p < 0.001), validating the structure of the correlation matrix. The EFA results indicated the presence of three factors, each with eigenvalues exceeding the Kaiser criterion of 1. The scree plot confirmed the existence of three factors beyond the inflection point. All items demonstrated factor loadings higher than 0.40, indicating their relevance to the identified factors. This factor structure was con ceptually justifiable. These factors were labeled as follows: 1) Affect ive attitude and effectiveness (6 items); 2) Perceived benefits and self-efficacy (3 items); and 3) Perceived burden (2 items). Collect ively, these factors accounted for 68.7% of the total variance. The ACRIS-CS total scale and subscales demonstrated good internal consistency, with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients ranging from 0.727 to 0.848. Conclusions: The results of the EFA and internal consistency analysis were satisfactory. The ACRIS-CS appears to be a valid and reliable scale for assessing the acceptability of CRIs among cancer survivors.

Portuguese version of the fear of progression questionnaire-short form (FoP-Q-SF) [abstract]
2023-09-01 - Silva, Sandra; Santos , Isabel M.; Torres, Ana; Paiva, Débora; Monteiro, Sara; Bártolo, Ana
Background: Considering that in Portugal, in 2020, 60.000 people were diagnosed with cancer and 50% died of the disease, it is not surprising that the diagnosis and subsequent stages, including survival, are marked by recurrent concerns and fears that the disease progresses negatively or reoccurs, with all its biopsychosocial consequences. Although this Fear of Progression/Recurrence is realistic and is part of the normal response to the disease, valid instruments are necessary to assess and monitor its severity and the evolution. The present study aimed to translate and validate the Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form (FoP-Q-SF) for the Portuguese population with cancer. Methods: The sample included 220 participants, aged 18 years or over and diagnosed with cancer for at least six months. Cancer patients completed the FoP-Q-SF, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core-30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) and the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C). Results: The FoP-Q-SF demonstrated high internal reliability (α=0.86). A confirmatory factorial analysis was conducted and supported a modified one-dimensional factorial structure, which allowed the covariance of errors between some of the items, to improve the fit of the model (CFI=0.96; TLI=.95; RMSEA=.08; 232 WRMR=0.8). The convergent validity was tested and, as expected, the strongest positive correlation was found between total FoP-Q-SF and anxiety scores. In addition, FoP-Q-SF was also positively and moderately associated with depressive symptoms and post-traumatic stress. Conclusion: The results indicated that the Portuguese version of the FoP-QSF is a reliable and valid measure for assessing Fear of Progression in cancer.

Memory Impairments and Wellbeing in Breast Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review
    2023-11-07 - Albuquerque, Pedro B.; Bártolo, Ana; Rodrigues, Pedro F. S.
Breast cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers among women. Its effects on the cognitive and wellbeing domains have been widely reported in the literature, although with inconsistent results. The central goal of this review was to identify, in women with breast cancer, the main memory impairments, as measured by objective and subjective tools and their relationship with wellbeing outcomes. The systematic literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest databases. The selected studies included 9 longitudinal and 10 cross-sectional studies. Although some studies included participants undergoing multimodal cancer therapies, most focused on chemotherapy’s effects (57.89%; n = 11). The pattern of results was mixed. However, studies suggested more consistently working memory deficits in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. In addition, some associations have been identified between objective memory outcomes (verbal memory) and wellbeing indicators, particularly depression and anxiety. The inconsistencies in the results could be justified by the heterogeneity of the research designs, objective and subjective measures, and sample characteristics. This review confirms that more empirical evidence is needed to understand memory impairments in women with breast cancer. An effort to increase the homogeneity of study methods should be made in future studies.

Exploring the acceptability of an environmental education program for youth in rural areas: ECOCIDADANIA Project
2023-09-26 - Silva, Isabel S.; Cunha-Saraiva, Filipa; Ribeiro, Ana Sofia; Bártolo, Ana
Background: There has been a growing interest in environmental education programs to improve environmental awareness and behavior change among school-aged youth. Yet, assessment of the approaches aligned with citizen science principles emphasizing community participation and empowerment is scarce. The present study aimed to explore the acceptability of the “ECOCIDADANIA” environmental education program targeted at youth in rural areas. Methods: The program was applied for two years in the municipality of Gouveia, and it involved nature walks methodologies combined with citizen science. A total of 107 students participated in the program. Eighteen participants (13 youth and 5 teachers) were selected as key informants, and semistructured interviews were conducted to assess the appropriateness of the intervention and the perceived benefits. Results: The program was demonstrated to be acceptable to youth and teachers, and its benefits included increasing students’ knowledge, skills and self-efficacy, discovering the territory, promoting environmental awareness, strengthening social relationships between peers and educators, and contributing to the promotion of individual and collective well-being. All the participants were satisfied with the program’s activities and recommend its continuation in the school context. Conclusions: Programs of this nature could foster environmental activism and enhance environmental sustainability at the local level, which reinforces the entrepreneurship profile of the youth.
