Publicação Acesso Aberto Synchronizing Treatment with Circadian Rhythm: A descriptive and exploratory analysis of adherence to endocrine therapy in breast cancer [abstract]2025-05-28 - Leal, Rúben; Costa, Ana Carolina; Bártolo, Ana; Fernandes, Sara M.; Rodrigues, Pedro F. S.Background: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among adult women and represents a disruptive event in the life cycle, with recognized impacts on quality of life. The most recurrent tumors in this context are hormone-dependent (Li et al., 2022), and adjuvant endocrine therapy is considered an essential component of the therapeutic plan. It is widely used to reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence and mortality, especially when administered over long periods (Uslu et al., 2023). Despite its proven effectiveness, deficits in prospective memory (i.e., the ability to plan an intention, retain it over time, and retrieve it when appropriate) may underlie unintentional nonadherence. Although the literature suggests the presence of subjective complaints of prospective memory in this context (Rodrigues et al., 2023), few studies have focused on understanding which factors influence these impairments in oncological settings. International studies have suggested that prospective memory may fluctuate throughout the day, influenced by circadian rhythm (i.e., morningness-eveningness/chronotype). Therefore, aligning medication intake with the optimal time of cognitive performance may reduce lapses in treatment adherence. Objectives: This preliminary study presents initial data from a project aimed at (i) characterizing behavioral patterns of adherence to endocrine therapy in breast cancer survivors and (ii) exploring the relationship between chronotype and prospective memory complaints. Methods: The sample included 65 women (Mage=47.5; SD=9.3; range=28–65), all undergoing endocrine therapy. Self-report instruments used were the Horne and Ostberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire and the Metacognitive Prospective Memory Inventory—Short Form. Descriptive and correlational analyses were performed. Results: Of the participants, 69.2% had an intermediate chronotype, 18.5% morning-type, and 12.3% evening-type. Most were taking tamoxifen and/or exemestane, with 43.8% medicating at night. A significant association was found between chronotype and medication timing (X²(4) = 10.5; p = .032). There was also a trend for evening and intermediate types to report fewer prospective memory complaints, though not statistically significant. Conclusions: Preliminary results indicate that chronotype may affect medication timing preferences in breast cancer survivors on endocrine therapy. Aligning adherence with circadian rhythms could support personalized treatment strategies. Further research is needed to clarify its link with prospective memory complaints.Publicação Acesso Aberto Fear of cancer recurrence, distress, and quality of life in adolescent and young adult cancer survivors2025-06-16 - Oliveira, Joana; Neves, Maria Carolina; Sales, Célia; Monteiro, Sara; Bártolo, AnaAdolescents and young adult cancer survivors often experience high levels of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR), which significantly impacts their emotional well-being and quality of life. The lack of studies on this target population in Portugal leads to a gap of knowledge that informs the development of interventions and solutions aimed at AYA cancer survivors. This study aimed to analyze the moderating effect of FCR on the relationship between emotional distress and quality of life in AYA surviving cancer. This is a cross-sectional study including 96 participants between the ages of 15 and 25 at the time of diagnosis. Sociodemographic, clinical, and psychosocial characteristics were collected through a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, the FCR7 scale, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core-30 (EORTC QLQ-C30). We analyzed correlations between FCR and clinical, sociodemographic factors and tested the direct and indirect relationships between FCR, distress, and quality of life. The results indicated that high levels of FCR were associated with lower emotional functioning, and gender was the only sociodemographic variable significantly associated with FCR. Although anxiety was found to influence emotional functioning in AYAs, FCR did not moderate the relationship between anxiety and emotional functioning. This study allows us to gain more knowledge about the psychological impact of the disease on this population. Publicação Acesso Aberto Promoting an entrepreneurial culture: Development, feasibility and acceptability of a primary school-based program focused on soft skills2023-10-25 - Jardim, Jacinto; Pereira, Anabela; Andreia, Pinho; Cardoso, Mónica; Catanho, Paixão; Bártolo, AnaThis study aims to develop and evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of an intervention program designed to foster soft skills among primary-school students. Conducted in Portugal, the program employed face-to-face sessions and involved 2958 fourth-grade students from nine municipalities. The program “Players of Dreams” (PD) [“Brincadores de Sonhos”] is an active learning approach that encourages students and other educational community members to engage actively in the learning process. The PD content was derived from a literature review and interviews with primary school teachers regarding the essential skills for success in life, like the considerable skills of an entrepreneurial culture. The PD program utilized group dynamics, pedagogical narratives/storytelling, visual thinking strategies (diagrams and illustrations), family involvement in activities, and specially prepared songs to facilitate learning. Teachers who implemented the program underwent 25 h of classroom training on entrepreneurial pedagogy and received a manual for conducting PD sessions. Students completed activities in their PD manuals and corresponding evaluation forms throughout the program The results provide preliminary evidence to support the benefits of implementing the intervention. The facilitators observed changes in student behavior related to the promotion of confidence, responsibility, sociability, and autonomy. The PD program shows promise for engaging young students and fostering the growth of an entrepreneurial culture. Future research could assess the effectiveness of PD in delivering education and support interventions, while longitudinal studies could provide valuable quantitative and qualitative data to inform educational policies for primary schools. Este estudo sugere evidências preliminares dos benefícios do teatro radiofónico no ajustamento psicossocial de reclusos(as).Publicação Acesso Aberto The European Portuguese version of the reproductive concerns after cancer scale for male cancer survivors: A preliminary psychometric validation study [comunicação oral]2024-04-06 - Silva, Juliana; Silva, Isabel S.; Oliveira, Ana Filipa; Louro, André; Torres, Ana; Santos , Isabel M.; Monteiro, Sara; Bártolo, AnaPoster apresentado no EPA2024: 32nd European Congress of Psychiatry.Publicação Acesso Aberto Reliability and factor structure of the 10-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) among Portuguese adults2019 - Pereira, Anabela; Monteiro, Sara; Oliveira, Carla Andreia; Jardim, Jacinto; Bártolo, Ana; Vagos, PaulaThe 10-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) has been presented as a valid measure to assess psychological distress levels in population surveys but its dimensional structure was not consensual. Our main objective was to provide a Portuguese version of the K10 exploring the reliability and factor structure of this measure. This cross-sectional study included 694 adults collecteda web-based survey and in training entities. Results showed that 37.9% of the individuals reported significant distress symptoms. A good internal consistency of the K10 scale (α=.91) and strong inter-item correlation (ranges350 to .659) were found in our study but the original one-dimensional structure was not confirmed. A two-factor model considering anxiety and depression as two latent, independent but correlated factors shows a good fit with the data even across two data collection methods. The K10 tool was sensitive to sociodemographic variables. Participants aged 40 or over and belonging to the general working class presented higher distress levels. Our data indicates the Portuguese version of K10 as a reliable tool with a factor structure to assess psychological distress.Publicação Acesso Aberto Validation of the short version of the Metacognitive Prospective Memory Inventory (MPMI-S) for Portuguese cancer survivors [comunicação oral: poster]2024-10-03 - Santos, Filipa; Oliveira, Ana Filipa; Caetano, Ana Paula; Rummel, Jan; Albuquerque, Pedro; Bártolo, Ana; Fernandes, Sara M.; Rodrigues, Pedro F. S.Background: The impact of cancer and its treatments on cognitive function has been increasingly studied. While inconsistencies exist depending on assessment measures (neuropsychological tests vs. self-reports), subjective memory complaints are well established. However, there is a lack of specific tools to assess the perceived impact on different types of memory. This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the Shortened Version of the Metacognitive Prospective Memory Inventory (MPMI-S) for Portuguese cancer patients. Impairments in this cognitive function—the ability to recall intended actions at a future moment—can affect treatment adherence and prognosis. Materials and Methods: The sample included 111 participants aged 18 to 65 years (M=49.3; SD=9.4), with breast cancer being the most frequently reported diagnosis (71.2%, n=79). Approximately 73.9% (n=82) had received chemotherapy. The process involved translation-back translation, expert panel analysis, and discussions with target population members. Psychometric properties were evaluated through reliability analysis (Cronbach’s α) and factor structure analysis via principal component analysis with oblimin rotation, alongside correlations with related constructs like personality, distress, and quality of life. Results: The measure revealed a distinct factor structure from the original German version, comprising four factors that explained 61.52% of the variance: (i) verification and planning strategies, (ii) imagery and mental visualization strategies, (iii) prospective forgetting, and (iv) recording/note-taking strategies. All factors showed adequate internal consistency, with significant positive intercorrelations and associations with conscientiousness, agreeableness, distress, and quality of life. Conclusion: The MPMI-S is a promising and reliable tool for assessing self-reported prospective memory capabilities and compensation strategies among cancer patients.
