Abstract
As
Assuming as the problematic of this investigation the understanding of the essential competencies to the exercise of the position of school principal, three research objectives were defined, namely: i) to ascertain the essential competencies to the exercise of the position of school principal, according to the teachers' perception, ii) to understand aspects inherent to the exercise of the position of school principal, from the perspective of teachers, and iii) to develop knowledge about the competency profile of a school principal, with reference to the perception of teachers. The research methodology adopted was primarily qualitative, with the case study being the privileged research strategy. The empirical study took place in the academic year of 2016, in a Teacher Training School in the city of Benguela. The questionnaire survey was the main data collection technique, and it was answered by fifty teachers (n=50). Documentary analysis and direct observation were adopted as the complementary means of data collection. A simple statistical analysis was the privileged data treatment technique. The main results of the present investigation indicate that, according to the participating teachers, the position of school principal should be exercised by a teacher with specialized training in the area of school management and administration. The main competencies for the position of school principal were those related to teamwork, communication, human resources management, leadership skills, teacher motivation, the valorisation of teaching work and the management and negotiation of conflicts.
