Abstract
Given the increase in average life expectancy, the opportunity for grandparents and grandchildren to share experiences for longer periods of time is increasing. In this context where intergenerational interactions are increasingly important in the development of emerging adult grandchildren, it is important to understand the impact that this grandparents-grandchildren relationship has on the stereotypes about the elderly and on the perception of life satisfaction itself, considering that studies in this field are still scarce. Thus, this study aims to understand the grandparent-grandchild emerging adult relationship, how it influences the stereotypes about older people, and the consequent life satisfaction of emerging young adults. To assess this relationship, the present study used the following instruments: the Grandchildren's Received Affection Scale, the Stereotypes of Older People Scale, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. A total of 205 young adults between the ages of 18 and 26 participated in the study. Regarding the results obtained, it was found that the relationship between grandparents and emerging adult grandchildren positively influences the life satisfaction of the latter, and that positive stereotypes indirectly mediate this relationship. The implications of these results are discussed in the final part of the present work.
