Abstract
Perfectionism has been widely associated with various indicators of psychological distress, namely anxiety and depressive symptomatology. In contrast, self-compassion emerges as a protective factor that may buffer the negative effects of dysfunctional cognitive patterns. In this context, the present study aimed to explore the role of perfectionism and self-compassion in predicting anxiety and depressive symptoms in community-dwelling adults aged between 18 and 55 years. Specifically, the study sought to examine whether higher levels of perfectionism were positively associated with higher levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms, whether self-compassion was negatively associated with these symptoms, and whether both variables jointly contributed to their explanation. The sample consisted of 449 participants, recruited through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. The results indicated that perfectionism was a significant predictor of both anxiety and depressive symptomatology, while self-compassion showed a significant contribution only in predicting depressive symptoms. Clinical interventions targeting perfectionism may be important in reducing its impact on anxiety and depressive symptomatology. Additionally, these findings highlight the importance of considering self-compassion as a relevant psychological resource in the promotion of mental health, particularly in mitigating the negative impact of perfectionism on depressive symptomatology.
