Abstract
superior privada (57.1% estudantes do sexo feminino; M idade = 18.85, DP = 1.22). Os
secundário predizem a gestão positiva do stress.
The transition and adaptation to higher education have been widely studied, given the difficulties experienced by many students that result in academic failure and attrition. It is therefore important to investigate students’ experienced levels of stress and the protective effect of variables such as social support and primary and secondary control strategies. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of social support and of primary and secondary control strategies (lowering expectations and positive reinterpretation) on perceived stress and the perception of stress management skills in college first-year students. Participants included 380 first-year students from a private higher education institution (57.1% female students; Mage = 18.85, SD = 1.22). The results show that gender, social support from friends and secondary control strategies predict students’ perceived stress. In addition, gender, social support from significant others, primary and secondary control strategies predict positive coping with stress. We discuss the findings and present some suggestions for future research and psychological intervention, in order to early identify students’ difficulties.
