Service quality: A competing value in health and wellness industry
2010 - Correia, Anabela G.; Antunes, Joaquim G.; Quintela, Joana
This study examined the impact of service quality on clients’ satisfaction. The empiric data were collected through surveys administrated to the users of five Portuguese thermal units and a hotel Spa. The investigation was based on SERVQUAL scale presented by Parasuraman, Zeithaml and Berry (1985). Necessarily, this model was adapted to the nature and characteristics of health and wellness industry. The dimensions of the service quality scale were reduced to the more significant ones for the studied units (attendance, assurance and tangibles). The results showed that are the aspects related to assurance and attendance that give more satisfaction to the users, that service quality is an antecedent of clients’ satisfaction and it has an impact on users’ loyalty.

The impact of short-term rental accommodation in urban tourism: A comparative analysis of tourists’ and residents’ perspectives
2024-07-11 - Albuquerque, Helena; Quintela, Joana; Marques, Jorge
Urban tourism has witnessed significant growth in recent years, driven by various factors that foster the transformation of urban areas into tourist hotspots. These factors include a rising interest in culture and heritage, ongoing urban redevelopment and conversion processes, and the introduction of new experiences and activities. Two particularly influential factors contributing to this growth are low-cost travel, which facilitates more accessible access to urban destinations, and the emergence of new types of accommodation, such as short-term rental (also known as local accommodation or Airbnb-type accommodation). The sudden and continuous growth of this type of tourist accommodation brings new challenges to cities and local communities. On the positive side, it contributes to job opportunities, the dynamism of the local economy, and urban revitalization. On the other hand, it also represents more difficulty in retaining the local population in city centers, as more and more buildings are converted into hostels and tourist apartments. In this context, it becomes essential to conduct studies evaluating the impacts of these dynamics in urban areas and how they influence residents’ and visitors’ perspectives. Therefore, this study aims to identify the main transformations resulting from short-term rental (STR) development, focusing on the impacts felt by tourists and residents in Porto. A questionnaire was distributed to tourists and residents in Porto’s city center in June 2023. The results reveal differences in opinions between tourists and residents, particularly concerning historical heritage preservation, local population relocation, and reduced housing availability for residents. Nevertheless, there is a similarity in their opinions regarding the stimulus that local accommodation brings to the economy and the rehabilitation of buildings and urban areas. This study reinforces the need to pay more attention to the future development of tourist accommodation in city centers, especially regarding local policies and territorial planning, to balance better tourism development and local communities’ quality of life.

"If you don’t know me by now": The importance of sustainability initiative awareness for stakeholders of professional sports organizations
2022-04-19 - Santos, Teresa; Cayolla, Ricardo; Quintela, Joana
This study explores the importance of sustainable initiatives (SI) in sport for the stakeholders of a professional sports organization (PSO) after three months of absence of the public at the stadiums due to the pandemic situation. Two topics—diversity and inclusion (DIVIN) and the attraction and retention of human capital (ARHC)—were considered and analyzed. A third factor—the distance of residence of the members and the PSO—was considered as an element of the possible relationship between the awareness of the SI and the assessment of the topics in question. A total of 5694 PSO members took an online survey. Through the description of the data, the results show that being aware of the SI performed is a crucial factor for the success of the SI. Distance positively influences SI awareness. The topics considered are rated most positively by members with awareness of the SI, with a higher rating for the topic with the highest external visibility.

2022-08-09 - Singh, Ramjit; Manhas, Parikshat Singh; Mir, Mudasir Ahmad; Quintela, Joana
The present research aims to determine the relationship between the construct of autonomy, intrinsic motivation, and tourist experience, as well as loyalty in the context of wellness and spa tourism. The exploratory–descriptive design was adopted in the present research. A research instrument was developed based on previous literature and was tested for a pilot study to check validity and reliability. A purposive sampling technique was used to collect the data from tourists who have gained spa experience. A total of 264 usable responses were received after distributing 400 questionnaires. The data were screened, processed, and analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 and Smart-PLS 2.0. The investigation showed that intrinsic motivation, autonomy, and experience positively impact positive emotions and life satisfaction. Besides, it also supported that positive emotions, experience, and life Satisfaction lead to loyalty. Furthermore, the present study tested the mediating role of experience, positive emotions, and life satisfaction; it was also found that experience mediates the relationship between autonomy, positive emotions, and life satisfaction. Positive emotions and life satisfaction were mediators in the relationship between experience and loyalty. Finally, the findings showed that destination images moderated the relationship between experience, positive emotions, and life satisfaction. The results of this investigation can be helpful for both the research community and marketers interested in investigating the well-being of tourists and destination loyalty.

Influence of service quality and satisfaction in future behavioural intentions among health and wellness users
    2014-10 - Correia, Anabela G.; Quintela, Joana
This paper analyses the influence of service quality and satisfaction in future behavioral intentions in health and wellness tourists. Service quality was defined by Parasuraman, Zeithaml e Berry (1985) through the SERVQUAL scale with five dimensions: tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. To analyse the future behavioral intentions, we considered the return and recommend intentions. A survey was conducted at five health and wellness tourism units situated in the central region of Portugal and the sample was constituted by a total of 268 users. The result analysis permitted to verify that service quality and satisfaction influences future behavioral intentions. It appears to be evident that the dimensions of assurance and empathy are the ones that most influence future behavioral intentions. In what concerns to satisfaction, we verify that it’s related with these both intentions, but mainly with the intention to return and to and reuse those health and wellness services. These results and the implications for health and wellness tourism organizations are discussed.

Nowadays, it still figures as one of the strategic products for development of tourism in both countries. The constant and solid growth of this type of tourism is due to the large range of modern life circumstances and constraints. The stress levels and the working hours and the improvement of the life hope, are factors that converge and obey to a bigger concern with the quality of life levels and also the sense of happiness. Consequently, Health and Wellness activities, specifically the ones that are rewarded with the therapeutic qualities and characteristics of thermal waters, are particularly valorised by different segments of demand. The purpose of the present paper is to analyse the relation of health and wellness tourism and the improvement of quality of life and the levels of happiness, in a comparative study between Portuguese and Hungarian realities. The analysis was made by the supply side. The empirical study was developed in a four months period and the empirical data were collected through the administration of a questionnaire as a data collection tool in some of the most important Thermal Baths, Hot Springs and SPAs of those countries. The study sample is made up of 753 Portuguese and Hungary users of those SPAs and thermal baths. The results of the empirical research are analysed and both cases are compared.
