Abstract
relativos ao exercício da função de bombeiro; Medida de Burnout de Shirom-Melamed;
dimensão Benevolência permite predizer a Fadiga Física.
Burnout becomes a response to an exposure to a chronic stressors at work, when the subject experiences a physical, cognitive and emotional energy burn that cannot be restored. Thus, because of the inherent characteristics of the profession, firefighters are a profession at risk of development of Burnout. The objective of the present study is to describe the Burnout phenomenon in Portuguese firefighters and to understand the importance of individual and organizational factors in its explanation. For this, the sample comprised 163 firemen of both sexes, of the district of Porto. In the collection of data, the following evaluation measures were used: questionnaire with sociodemographic questions and questions of a nature related to the professional function of firefighter; Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure; Impact of Event Scale-Revised and Organizational Confidence Scale. Results showed that sex correlates with Burnout, with females presenting higher levels of Physical Fatigue, Cognitive Fatigue and Total Burnout Scores; that the traumatic symptomatology correlates positively with the Total Burnout Score and with all its dimensions; that, in the Organizational Confidence Scale, the Confidence dimension correlates negatively with the Total Burnout Score and all its dimensions, the Benevolence dimension correlates negatively with the Physical Fatigue dimension and with the Total Burnout Score and the Propensity to Trust correlates negatively with the Physical Fatigue dimension. We can also observe that the traumatic symptomatology allows to predict the Total Burnout Score and all its dimensions, whereas, the Benevolence dimension allows to predict Physical Fatigue.
