Abstract
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has promoted psychological well-being in various populations, but evidence on its efficacy in Social Anxiety Disorder (SBP) in adolescents is scarce, as well as whether this efficacy is associated with change in constructs central to ACT. This study aims to assess whether there is change in social anxiety felt by adolescents pre to post an ACT intervention and whether that change is explained by changes in those constructs. The sample consisted of 22 adolescents (86.4% girls) aged 15 to 18 years old attending high school, and with a primary diagnosis of generalized SBP. These adolescents received the ACT@TeenSAD intervention, consisting of 10 weekly structured sessions conducted by videoconference. The Latent Change Score Model was used to investigate changes in social anxiety, which based on three core social fears (i.e., Interaction, Performance, and Observation) and on Psychological Inflexibility, Acceptance, and Committed Action. Furthermore, it was investigated whether changes in these ACT constructs contribute to explain changes in social anxiety. Overall, the results obtained offered evidence of the usefulness of the intervention for adolescents with SBP, supporting the theoretical model of this model and the mechanisms underlying therapeutic gains.
