Family needs in processes of Early Intervention: A study with families and professionals
Abstract
This work tried to study the perceptions of families and technicians, working in the North of Portugal, who are involved in processes of Early Intervention (I.P.) of socio-educational and therapeutic nature with children whose development is compromised or in case of risk. The Portuguese legislative framework on Early Intervention, namely Despacho Conjunto nº 891/99 of October 18, stresses the importance of enabling the Early Intervention family in a process that requires from I.P. professionals a understanding of the family’s points of view, specifically about their needs and the subjective perception of those needs. Participants were 11 professionals and 78 family members with early intervention children who answered a family needs questionnaire by Bailey e Simeonsson (1988), adapted by Serrano (1990). The results show that families seem to emphasize issues related to their own child, such as the need to obtain information about the child, or other professional help, and that families and professionals differ significantly in terms of social and family support, community support and other professional help. Only the economic aspects seem to be valued very similarly between families and professional
