Abstract
1996), na melhoria do sistema imunitário (Both, Pennebaker, Davison & Thomas,
feridas (Koschwanez, Kerse, Darragh, Jarret, Booth & Broadbent, 2013). No entanto, e
diminuição do afeto negativo a longo prazo.
Writing in the light of the Pennebaker paradigm has been associated with benefits in healthy and clinical populations, young and old (Pennebaker & Chung, 2007). These improvements have been demonstrated in the reduction of depressive symptoms (Lepore, 1996), in the improvement of the immune system (Both, Pennebaker, Davison & Thomas, 1995), in the reduction of intrusive thoughts (Segal, Bogaards, Becker & Chatman, (Koschwanez, Kerse, Darragh, Jarret, Booth & Broadbent, 2013). In the present study, the results of the present study are presented. However, despite all the evidence, studies on this paradigm continue to focus, for the most part, on younger populations. To fill this gap, the present research, of a mixed nature involving 21 elderly participants, aimed to: 1) Explore the thematic, emotional and cognitive contents present in the narratives elaborated in the third age; And 2) to evaluate the effect of expressive writing on subjective well-being, physical well-being and mental health [evaluated, respectively, through] the Positive Affect and Negative Affective Scale (Panas), Health Status Questionnaire SF- 36 and the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI)]. Of the 21 records of the task of expressive writing emerged 15 significant life events that emphasized events such as deaths and losses, conflicts in the family relationship and spirituality and religion as a coping strategy. Writing about these events has led to an increase in positive affect and a decrease in long-term negative affect. There have also been changes over time that are positive in physical pain, social function, vitality and mental health (decreased levels of depression, anxiety and interpersonal sensitivity). These results are in agreement with the literature found in reinforcing the positive effect of expressive writing among the elderly, placing this strategy as an easyto- use, low cost tool that can produce significant effects not only mentally but also physically.
