Abstract
University is a challenging stage of life that can involve academic stress, which may lead to psychopathological symptoms. This study’s main objective is to develop and test the effectiveness of a brief distance intervention focused on compassion in reducing levels of self-criticism, stress, and promoting mental health in college students. This is a quasi-experimental study involving 117 college students, of which, 68 voluntarily agreed to participate in one of the two intervention groups, one focused on gratitude (n = 32) and the other focused on compassion (n = 36), for 4 weeks. Results from the regression analysis showed that self-criticism, particularly inadequate self was the best predictor of stress and poorer mental health. In turn, the ability to self-reassure the self was also a significant predictor of participants’ mental health. Concerning the effectiveness results showed no statistically significant differences between the two intervention groups at pre and post-test for all study’s variables. Also, no significant differences were found between pre and pos-for the compassion focused intervention group analysis. Although our results do not corroborate the effectiveness of the intervention, we believe that they contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between these constructs and for the intervention improvement.
