Abstract
O objetivo do presente estudo é explorar e
positivas e diminuem as negativas associadas ao trabalho emocional, apoiando a
autodeterminação dos profissionais.
The work developed in palliative care services has a high emotional load, with consequences for the professionals. Therefore, it is relevant to explore the construct of emotional labor in this context, considering that it is a process through which professionals manage their emotions, with the purpose of expressing a desired or adequate emotion!in a certain situation or context of their work. The application of the self-determination theory to the study of health contexts and professionals has shown that the non-satisfaction of the basic psychological needs has consequences at several levels.!The aim of the present study is to explore and understand the meaning of selfdetermination and the experiences of emotional labor in palliative care professionals, investigating what emotional regulation strategies they use in their work. This is a qualitative study that used semi-structured interviews conducted to eight professionals of a palliative care unit. The interviews explored work routines, emotional labor strategies, and the perception of self-determination in the professional context. Through the content analysis of the interviews, we found a high level of satisfaction of psychological needs, which contributes to the well-being of these professionals. There was also a differentiated use of emotional labor strategies, focused on the response or on the antecedents, depending on the situation/context in which the professional is in. This differentiation contributes to the maintenance of the professionals’ well-being. The results of this study support the development of organizational practices that optimize positive consequences and decrease negatives ones associated with emotional labor, while supporting professionals’ self-determination.
