Abstract
Although research on emotional intelligence has grown exponentially in recent years, it is still scarce in what concerns the influence of family contexts on its development and relationship with adolescent adaptation. The present study aimed to analyze the mediating role that emotional intelligence plays in the relationship between the parental climate, as a facilitator of adolescents' self-determination, and adaptation in a multifaceted perspective, indicated by the satisfaction of basic psychological needs, affective balance, satisfaction with life and academic achievement. A total of 393 adolescents from the 8th and 9th grades of two public schools aged 13-18 years (M = 14.10, SD = 0.96) participated in this study, 53% of them male. The results suggest that a more positive parental climate, in terms of support for autonomy, involvement and affective warmth, is positively related to better adaptation. The mediation analysis allowed us to conclude that emotional intelligence is a significant mediator in the relationship between the parental climate and adolescent adaptation indicators. The results are discussed in light of previous research, and some suggestions for future studies and implications for psychoeducational intervention are presented.
