Abstract
âmbito do contexto prisional.
Aging in Portugal entails dramatic implications, which does not exclude the prison context, and the lack of papers about this area are some of the reasons that led to the choice of this topic. This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the perspectives of elderly prisoners as well as the staff and professionals who work daily in the prison system. The study follows a qualitative approach, focused on the analysis of a case study. Data collection was based on a document analysis of the current legislation and the individual processes of each prisoner, as well as through open interviews carried out to prisoners with age avoer 60 years old. In regard to the professionals, open interviews were held. Ethical principles were carefully ensured throughout all phases of the work. Some of the main conclusions of this study point out to the rejection of aging phenomena by elderly prisoners. Working, indoor prison, is considered an important issue, as it is mentioned in all phases by elderly prisoners. Another conclusion, with regard to professional staff in the prison, is the lack of rehabilitation professionals and programs to develop the capabilities of older prisoners. The absence of legislation and policies for inmates is another shortcoming result of this study.
