Abstract
This study aimed to explore the relationship between the executive functions, namely, the inhibition, the working memory, the cognitive flexibility as well as the abstract reason and the emotional management struggles, regarding college students. The existence of statistically significant differences between the executive functioning and the different levels of emotional management struggles was investigated. The sample was a convenience, nonprobabilistic sample, consisting of 30 participants of both sexes, aged between 18 and 26 years old. The results show strong positive correlations between the EDRE-18 and clarity, objectives, impulses, and non-acceptance. No associations were found regarding the conscience. Despite these results, no significant correlations were found, regarding the executive functions. One of the most relevant results was the moderately negative correlation between the inhibition and the working memory. Additionally, a moderately positive correlation was found between the work memory and the abstract reason. No statistically significant differences were found at the executive function level, between students with high and low emotional management struggles. These results made possible to conclude that the working memory is related to the inhibition, being the latter, even considered the driving force behind the working memory and, consequently, the driving force behind the goal achieving. The results also indicate that the executive functions normal functioning seems to be independent of the struggles felt related to the emotional management.
