Abstract
Most studies focusing on men's parenting are devoted to analysing the factors that may influence their involvement with the child, but less are dedicated to analysing the factors that may be associated with a higher or lower quality of the psychological experience of fatherhood. The present study wanted to examine the association between maternal gatekeeping and fathers' mental health and parenting self-efficacy, as well as the mediating role of dyadic adjustment in this relationship. The sample included 142 men, aged between 21 and 57 years, who had children aged between 0 months and 10 years. Data were collected through the dissemination of the study on sociais networks, as well as educational institutions in the Porto Metropolitan area that accepted to disseminate the study in their establishment. The results obtained showed that a higher perception of maternal gate-opening behaviours and a lower perception of maternal gate-closing behaviours are associated with higher levels of parental mental health and perceived self-efficacy, mediated by different indicators of dyadic adjustment (respectively, satisfaction and dyadic cohesion, for mental health, and consensus and dyadic cohesion, for parental self-efficacy). In addition, a higher perception of maternal communication is associated with higher levels of mental health through higher levels of dyadic cohesion. The results of this study contribute to preventive and remedial intervention with families, namely, psycho-educating families about the importance of considering the contributions of each parent to the child's development, specifically the role of the father.
