Abstract
Cyberbullying is an intentional, aggressive and harmful conduct, motivated to cause harm to another person and carried out through new technologies. This phenomenon is relatively recent and very complex. Investigating and intervening in cyberbullyng is fundamental, above all, because the proliferation of new technologies and the number of users is increasing. Most investigations and interventions are aimed at children and young people; however, cyberbullying is a phenomenon that cuts across all ages. The present study aims to understand the phenomenon of cyberbullying in young adults, aged between 18 and 24 years old and to develop an online Social and Educational Prevention Project for this age group. To find out what is known about the phenomenon, a systematic literature review was carried out and to understand the phenomenon within the group of young Portuguese adults, a questionnaire was applied to 100 young people aged between 18 and 24 years old. Among the various conclusions of our study, we highlight that more research and intervention among young adults is needed because this phenomenon is not just an adolescent issue. The prevalence rate, in this age group, is 14%; the acts are mostly performed by unknown people, which proves that anonymity is in fact a motivation for this practice, the consequences are harmful to victims, witnesses and aggressors and ultimately to society, and finally, that cyberbullying is not identified by most people. These results justify the intervention with young adults. The proposal presented here is the Socio-Educational Project for the Prevention of Cyberbullying Online: What if it was with you? It raises awareness of the phenomenon, gives guidelines for prevention, it suggests action measures for victims and witnesses and opens a space for joint reflection on the phenomenon.
