Abstract
Consideradas todas as autorizações
adolescentes do sexo masculino e feminino.
A strong and frequent bond between grandparents and grandchildren is important for emotional closeness, respect for grandparents, mental health, and self-esteem of adolescents. Socioemotional skills also play a crucial role in the development of adolescents, positively impacting their quality of life. Although not addressed in the literature, a context of closeness and strong connection with grandparents can contribute to the development of these skills. Therefore, this study has two main objectives: 1) to analyze differences in grandparent-grandchild relationships and perceptions of their own socioemotional skills based on the biological sex of the adolescent grandchildren; 2) to understand the influence that the grandparent-grandchild relationship may have on the perception of socioemotional skills of the adolescent grandchildren, and whether this influence is similar based on the biological sex of the grandchildren. The sample consisted of 218 participants of both sexes, aged between 15 and 18 years (M = 16.44; SD = 1.02). Taking all necessary permissions and compliance with ethical and deontological principles, these participants completed self-report questionnaires about the grandparent-grandchild relationship and socioemotional skills. The results of this study reveal that grandparent-grandchild relationships are not differently perceived by boys and girls. In terms of socioemotional skills, it was found that males demonstrate higher levels of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and decision-making. The study revealed a positive effect of the love and esteem felt by grandchildren in their relationship with their grandparents on the perceptions of self-awareness, self-management, motivation, social awareness and pro-social behavior, and decision-making. This association was found to be applicable to both male and female adolescents. This study provides evidence of the positive impact of an affective relationship between grandparents and grandchildren on the perception of socioemotional skills in adolescents.
