Abstract
motivaram a realização deste estudo.
orientam a investigação.
Particularmente, o estudo procura abordar
as seguintes questões:
As BE ainda
The changes occurred in the world of information the past decades and the resulting change in the way societies in general and individuals in particular began to relate to it as consumers, but also producers, motivated this study. The perceived importance of IL for the development of full citizenship and the important role that school libraries (SL) achieved in recent years in the Portuguese educational structure, provide the framework of motivations that guide the investigation. Thus, this work has as: Aim - to know whether there is a relationship between skills in IL revealed by students of the 1st year of bachelor’s degree and integrated master at a private higher education institution, coming from secondary schools with libraries integrated in the School Libraries Network, and the work done by these libraries in promoting IL. In particular, the study seeks to address the following questions: • What skills in IL have university students of the 1st year who attended public secondary schools with integrated libraries in the School Libraries Network? • Public secondary school libraries integrated into the School Libraries Network contribute to the development of IL in future college students? • What are the actions or programs implemented by public high school libraries of the School Libraries Network for the development of information skills in their students? • Are there any conditioning factors of the effectiveness of actions or IL development programs undertaken by libraries of public secondary schools part of the School Libraries Network? • Do the public high school libraries part of the School Libraries Network evaluate the implemented IL development actions or programs impact on the students? Instruments - survey questionnaire answered on-line; information literacy test; interview Universe and sample - the universe matches the sample, because the sample is the total enrolled 1st year of bachelor’s degree and integrated master in a private higher education institution - 10 students - from public secondary schools with school libraries integrated into the School Libraries Network - 7 school libraries, belonging to the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga and Porto. Method - despite the use of a quantitative tool - the survey -, this research followed the qualitative method. An email questionnaire was sent to the 7 librarian teachers (LT) responsible for the studied school libraries and another one was sent to the 10 sample students. The survey sent to the LT intended to find the SL work on the development The survey sent to LT wanted to learn about the work of the SL in the development of IL and their perception about this work; the questionnaire sent to students tried to find out how they used SLs during High School and the way they handled information during that period. It was later asked students the completion of the IL test; and, finally, an interview with one of the coordinators of inter municipal SL was held in order to clarify some doubts left by survey responses. Main results - students from the sample revealed low levels of skills in LI. However, these students considered themselves efficient at using information; and LT did not have a real sense of the difficulties of the students, because they do not assess their levels, either before or after performing LI development actions. The lack of an IL program for secondary education affects the development of information skills in students, because, by not having precise work guidelines, the SL distance themselves from Secondary students providing them few actions and allowing for an interruption in the development of skills that students have acquired during Basic Education. Conclusion - the results of this study show that students coming out of secondary school and newly entered in Higher Education hold low levels of IL. SL still do not perform systematic actions for the development of information skills in students of Secondary Education, which causes a failure in the development of skills that had been acquired. It is also significant the fact that SL do not assess the impact of the actions developed among students, as this means that there isn’t an adjustment of the actions to the real needs of students. Having little systematic work and almost void of collaboration with the curricular teachers, the SL end up with little contribution for the development of information skills on Secondary School students, thus justifying the low level of skills evidenced.
