Abstract
Competition is present in many areas of our lives, such as work, relationships and society. For several decades the competition was defined as one-dimensional, characterized only by negative aspects. Nowadays, the paradigm is different and competition is interpreted as a multidimensional construct, encompassing different dimensions, including a positive view. The main objective of this study is to understand if attitudes towards competition have an impact on the perceived stress of individuals in an organizational context. The sample comprised 130 individuals of both sexes, from different stores of a company that operates in the area of food distribution. After the authorization of the company and obtaining the informed consent of the participants, the following evaluation measures were applied: a sociodemographic questionnaire and professional information, the Muldimensional Inventory of Attitudes of Competition and the Perceived Stress Scale. We observed that individuals with high levels of perceived stress present high levels of lack of interest in competition and avoidance of competition for anxiety, but present low levels of self-development promoting competitiveness. In analyzing the predictive effect of different attitudes towards competition on perceived stress, we found that high levels of avoidance of competition for anxiety caused predict high levels of perceived stress. On the contrary, we have found that the self-development promoting competitiveness predicts low levels of perceived stress. We conclude that attitudes towards competition have an impact on the psychological health of individuals, more specifically on the level of perceived stress.
