Abstract
Education is an essential instrument to deal with the physical, psychological, social and emotional needs of hospitalized children. We have developed a project on emotional education, that we called “Learning with disease”, which aims to understand how hospitalized children feel and discover their emotions and to help them to use this experience positively in the development of their personality. We, therefore, created opportunities for the paediatric patient to express, clarify and regulate his/her own emotions, using dialog and pleasant activities, like relaxation, massage, laughing sessions, musical expression and others to be analysed in later publications. We have selected Joy, Affection, Shame, Sadness, Anxiety and Fear, since they were the most frequently experienced and most lasting emotions, as verified by direct observation of behaviour and verbal communication of patients. We have characterized each of these emotions in conformity to various accepted descriptions and created our own working definitions adapted to the hospital context, based on our experience. Children were asked and taught to make a record of these emotions in connection with their usual daily routines. Negative emotions, namely Fear, were studied in greater detail for their major relevance in the experience of hospitalized children and their families and also because it is our main purpose to develop strategies to provide the maximum possible comfort to the patients during their hospital stay, with maximum relief of pain and distress related both to the underlying disease and to the necessary clinical procedures. This investigation was developed within the framework of Hospital Pedagogy which is a branch of Pedagogy devoted to observe and promote child´s development in a hospital setting where, in spite of being hospitalized, patients keep on growing as human beings and have a unique opportunity to learn to cope with new and inevitable facts of life, integrating them positively in their experience and in the development of their personality. Our objectives and strategies are currently exposed on a board in our meeting room, which we have called “Pátio das Ideas” (Courtyard of Ideas).
