Publication Open Access Historical landscape: A methodological proposal to analyse the settlements of monasteries in the birth of Portugal2024-09-25 - Freitas, Isabel Vaz de; Lopes, Hélder Silva; Albuquerque, Helena; REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information TechnologiesThis study aims to understand and characterise the landscape of monasteries in early medieval Portugal using a methodology to better comprehend the factors influencing monastery construction. The research focuses on variables such as altitude, slope, aspect, hydrology, geomorphology, and topographic prominence. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for detailed spatial analysis, the study reveals that monasteries were typically located in areas with slight elevations, gentle slopes, and proximity to watercourses, reflecting considerations about resource exploitations, access, and population development. The analysis shows no significant differences in construction preferences among different religious orders, indicating a general adaptability to the local environment rather than distinct criteria for each order. Despite the broad trends, individual orders exhibited some variability in their specific site selections, such as altitude and slope preferences. The findings highlight the importance of integrating historical and environmental data to understand settlement patterns, providing valuable insights into the strategic considerations behind monastery locations. Future research could expand on these findings by incorporating socio-economic impacts, enhancing our understanding of medieval monastic landscapes.Publication Open Access Photure: Educational Handbook2025-02-01 - Lopez, Alejandro; Palotás, Gábor; Hiasnémeti, Máté; Juvanec, Borut; Juvanec, Maj; Benko, Andrea; Vlad, Sorana; Stoica, Radu; Carlos, Gilberto Duarte; REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies; Lima, Ana; Quintela, Joana A.; Freitas, Isabel Vaz de; Silva, Fátima MatosDeciding when and why to employ photogrammetry in architectural surveying depends on the specific objectives of the project, the available resources, and the expertise of the surveyors involved. This handbook aims to assist in such decision-making by providing practical guidance. In practice, photogrammetry is most effective when used in combination with classical surveying techniques, either as a preliminary data-capturing phase or as part of a hybrid approach to create a comprehensive and detailed representation of a building. Cadima; Ribeiro, Vitor; Freitas, Isabel Vaz deMost of the strategies developed to “save” rural te rritories in Europe have not been successful. One of their main problems has been the adoption of the top-down paradigm when approaching the development of those territories. P ortugal is a good example of the difficulty of adopting a bottom-up paradigm. The main objectiv e of this paper is to present the perceptions of the local (including the residents) and regional stakeholders acting at Boticas regarding the set of resources available and the de velopment of the tourism industry. Boticas is a Northern Portuguese rural low density municipa lity. In capturing those perceptions, the research contributes to the establishment of a more integrated and innovative development strategy and thus a more able strategy for profitin g from the potential associated with the growing of the tourism industry experienced recentl y by Portugal. The adoption of a mixed- method for evaluating these resources and capturing the perceptions of the tourist potential by the different stakeholders is suggested. Empiric al data was collected through a survey of 373 of its residents and 25 interviews conducted wi th local and regional actors, further supported by an inventory of the cultural resources and their capacity for visits. We conclude here that residents tend to have a very positive pe rception of tourism development, and indeed, their perceptions largely met those of othe r stakeholders.Publication Open Access A água, o Mosteiro de Santo Tirso e a Levada de Pereiras.2013 - Silva, João Paulo Machado; Freitas, Isabel Vaz dePublication Open Access Demarcações de fronteira: lugares de Trás-os-Montes e Entre-Douro-e-Minho.2003 - Moreno, Humberto Baquero; Freitas, Isabel Vaz deEm 12 de Junho de 1538 o visitador de D. These landscapes provide a legacy of history, showing how local communities have shaped their environments. Since the 1972 World Heritage Convention, cultural landscapes have been recognized within a historical and scientific context, with preservation- and conservation-embracing concepts such as belonging, uniqueness, meaning, and locality. These values highlight the importance of cultural landscapes in shaping identity and cultural heritage. The 2000 Landscape Convention further emphasized the vital role that landscapes (including land, inland, water, and marine areas) play in individual and social well-being. It highlighted their contribution to enhancing the quality of life, reflecting cultural, scientific, aesthetic, and historical values. Cultural landscapes are irreplaceable assets of immense significance, yet balancing their preservation with modern development remains challenging. In rapidly urbanizing areas, development can be destructive, while low-density regions may face land abandonment. Reconciling the needs of preservation with modern growth requires dialogue and the development of solutions that align economic growth with cultural integrity. Sustainable practices offer an effective pathway to harmonize these objectives, ensuring cultural heritage is respected while supporting necessary development. Such practices should integrate cultural landscapes into urban planning through designs that maintain the historical and cultural integrity of the area. Planning and designing natural and built landscapes must address climate change impacts and heritage site risks. The challenge ensures that modern development does not conflict with historical and cultural values. This requires thoughtful planning and design that respects heritage while integrating new functionalities and adaptive reuses. Community engagement is key to creating a shared vision for development and raising awareness of the importance of preserving cultural landscapes. Incorporating green, nature-based solutions and traditional techniques is also essential for promoting sustainability and harmony. Additionally, regenerative and sustainable thinking, which emphasizes carrying capacity and risk identification, ensures long-term preservation. By adopting sustainable practices, it is possible to ensure cultural landscapes continue to shape identities for future generations while adapting to modern needs.Publication Open Access D.
