Identifying Coastal Heritage Vulnerabilities: The Case of Historical Fortified Structures in Northern Portugal
2025-12-09 - Freitas, Isabel Vaz de; Lopes, Hélder Silva; Silva, Fátima Matos
Landscapes and heritage sites hold significant historical, scientific, and social value but face increasing threats from climate change and human activities. Coastal and maritime heritage are at risk from sea-level rise, storms, erosion, ocean acidification, and pressures such as urbanization, construction, and industrial development. Assessing vulnerability involves considering physical, geomorphological, and socioeconomic factors, including land use, population density, tourism, and ecosystem sensitivity. Long-term monitoring, interdisciplinary research, and holistic approaches are essential for effective risk assessment and planning. This study focuses on the coastal landscapes of northern Portugal, where climate change adaptation is urgent. These areas contain important historical heritage, especially fortified military structures that reflect regional identity and maritime history shared with other coastal nations. The research highlights significant risks to these monuments because of their proximity to the sea and expanding urban areas, providing insights to guide policymakers and support localized adaptation strategies. A two-phase methodology was employed, beginning with a comprehensive literature review to identify key indicators that informed field observations, surveys, and archival research, resulting in a detailed inventory of coastal and estuarine fortifications. The second phase assessed their vulnerability to sea-level rise, coastal flooding, and shoreline retreat. The study presents a methodological approach that provides local decision-makers with strategic guidance to enhance the protection and sustainable management of coastal heritage.

Historical landscape: A methodological proposal to analyse the settlements of monasteries in the birth of Portugal
2024-09-25 - Freitas, Isabel Vaz de; Lopes, Hélder Silva; Albuquerque, Helena; REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies
This study aims to understand and characterise the landscape of monasteries in early medieval Portugal using a methodology to better comprehend the factors influencing monastery construction. The research focuses on variables such as altitude, slope, aspect, hydrology, geomorphology, and topographic prominence. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for detailed spatial analysis, the study reveals that monasteries were typically located in areas with slight elevations, gentle slopes, and proximity to watercourses, reflecting considerations about resource exploitations, access, and population development. The analysis shows no significant differences in construction preferences among different religious orders, indicating a general adaptability to the local environment rather than distinct criteria for each order. Despite the broad trends, individual orders exhibited some variability in their specific site selections, such as altitude and slope preferences. The findings highlight the importance of integrating historical and environmental data to understand settlement patterns, providing valuable insights into the strategic considerations behind monastery locations. Future research could expand on these findings by incorporating socio-economic impacts, enhancing our understanding of medieval monastic landscapes.

    Photure: Educational Handbook
2025-02-01 - Lopez, Alejandro; Palotás, Gábor; Hiasnémeti, Máté; Juvanec, Borut; Juvanec, Maj; Benko, Andrea; Vlad, Sorana; Stoica, Radu; Carlos, Gilberto Duarte; REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies; Lima, Ana; Quintela, Joana A.; Freitas, Isabel Vaz de; Silva, Fátima Matos
Deciding when and why to employ photogrammetry in architectural surveying depends on the specific objectives of the project, the available resources, and the expertise of the surveyors involved. This handbook aims to assist in such decision-making by providing practical guidance. In practice, photogrammetry is most effective when used in combination with classical surveying techniques, either as a preliminary data-capturing phase or as part of a hybrid approach to create a comprehensive and detailed representation of a building.

The planning of tourism on rural areas: The stakeholders' perceptions of the Boticas municipality (Northeastern Portugal)
2017 - Remoaldo, Paula; Matos, Olga; Lopes, Helder; Silva, Sara; Sánchez-Fernández, Maria Dolores; Ribeiro, J. Cadima; Ribeiro, Vitor; Freitas, Isabel Vaz de
Most of the strategies developed to “save” rural te rritories in Europe have not been successful. One of their main problems has been the adoption of the top-down paradigm when approaching the development of those territories. P ortugal is a good example of the difficulty of adopting a bottom-up paradigm. The main objectiv e of this paper is to present the perceptions of the local (including the residents) and regional stakeholders acting at Boticas regarding the set of resources available and the de velopment of the tourism industry. Boticas is a Northern Portuguese rural low density municipa lity. In capturing those perceptions, the research contributes to the establishment of a more integrated and innovative development strategy and thus a more able strategy for profitin g from the potential associated with the growing of the tourism industry experienced recentl y by Portugal. The adoption of a mixed- method for evaluating these resources and capturing the perceptions of the tourist potential by the different stakeholders is suggested. Empiric al data was collected through a survey of 373 of its residents and 25 interviews conducted wi th local and regional actors, further supported by an inventory of the cultural resources and their capacity for visits. We conclude here that residents tend to have a very positive pe rception of tourism development, and indeed, their perceptions largely met those of othe r stakeholders.
