Heritage and sustainable development: capacity building through tourism
2021-03 - Koskowski, Michał Ryszard; Freitas, Isabel Vaz de
Heritage protection becomes an ever-greater challenge due to constant and numerous threats by natural elements and the sole passage of time. This deterioration is increased by other stress circumstances such as economic, social and development pressures, climate change, war, social and religious conflicts, and a number of other factors related to heritage use. Heritage and historical landscapes should be preserved not only because of their role as an important testimony to bygone times and the source of a spirit of place, but because heritage and culture are important factors of territorial and economic development. Moreover, tourism is one of the sectors of economy that could improve the conservation of heritage and maintenance of cultural diversity. The study will facilitate an author review to complete the picture of the current situation and to find gaps; a documental analysis in order to capture the main concepts, compile the risks and opportunities from selected international and European documents as well as interviews with selected heritage stakeholders and professionals in relevant fields.

Feeling a historic city: Porto landscape through the eyes of residents and visitors
2021-10 - Sousa, Cristina; Albuquerque, Helena; Freitas, Isabel Vaz de; Ramazanova, Makhabbat
Purpose – This paper aims to monitor the urban landscape through the perceptions of residents and visitors, identifying features that cause visual impacts and providing insights for landscape management decision-makers. Captured impressions about the city whilst moving around are important to assess the satisfaction of city residents and city visitors through key elements, such as directional signage, outdoor advertising, restaurants’ outdoor terrace furniture, urban furniture, green spaces, traffic, cleaning, pedestrian areas, visitor flow and conservation of monuments, museums and buildings. Design/methodology/approach – A survey was applied in the historical Porto city centre (Portugal) to understand residents’ and visitors’ perceptions of the city landscape and assess the differences between these two groups. Cronbach’s alpha was used to assess the reliability of the constructs (dimensions) of urban landscape. Non-parametric Mann-Whitney test was used to find significant differences in the perceptions of residents and visitors. Findings – The results suggest significant differences in the perceptions. Residents value more two constructs of the landscape (heritage conservation and transport mobility) whilst visitors value more other two (pedestrian mobility and aesthetic quality). It is showed that residents have a strong sense of place and are concerned with the conservation of historical heritage. Visitors are more concerned with dimensions intrinsically related to tourism. Originality/value – This research allowed to fill a gap found in the literature, namely, the importance of considering the perceptions of different actors in the urban landscape monitoring. These results are an important contribution for local authorities to understand the value of urban landscape elements from the perspective of residents and visitors. This study opened the possibility of comparing the results from different historical cities centres.

Profile of creative tourist in north-western of Portugal: An exploratory approach to creative experiences
2018 - Matos, Olga; Remoaldo, Paula; Alves, Juliana; Gôja, Ricardo; Ribeiro, Vítor; Miguel, Pereira; Freitas, Isabel Vaz de
Nowadays there is the emergence of a new type of visitors. This 'new' tourist has a new role as producer of the products and experiences that he himself consumes and is therefore called the “creative consumer” or simply a “creative tourist”. Defining the concept of creative tourism and who the creative tourists are, is not an easy task. In this sense, the present study intends to identify the profile of the creative tourist of the Northwestern Region and its motivations, as well as to understand the characteristics of the cultural/creative sector existing in that region of Continental Portugal. The theme of this research arises because there is no clear definition of the profile of who is the consumer of these creative experiences, based on national and international scientific studies. Thus, from July to December 2017, 205 questionnaires were applied to participants in the creative activities of the 5 pilot institutions corresponding to the northern region of the first call of the CREATOUR project - "Development of Creative Tourism Destinations in Small Cities and Rural Areas", in Continental Portugal. For the analysis of the data, descriptive and analytical statistics were used through the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 20). Based on the surveys, the profile of the creative tourist in the Northwestern region of Continental Portugal follows the trend of other investigations carried out in Portugal, namely in 2012 and 2014. From the data found and regarding marital status, 52.2% are single and 32.7% are married and demonstrate a high level of education, with 44.3% with a bachelor's or master's degree. It should also be noted that the majority of tourists, i.e. 90.2%, are from Portugal, followed by the Spanish and Brazilian tourists, (...)

Good and not-so-good practices in creative tourism networks and platforms: an international review
2019 - Remoaldo, Paula; Olga, Matos; Hélder da Silva, Lopes; Ribeiro, Vitor; Ricardo, Côja; Miguel, Pereira; Freitas, Isabel Vaz de
A consensus has not yet been reached worldwide regarding the concept of creative tourism. Since 2000, it has generally been considered as a kind of tourism that can offer tourists the opportunity to co-create and develop their creative potential. To identify and analyze the nature of existing creative tourism practices today, we carried out an investigation to examine creative tourism networks and platforms internationally - providing a snapshop of the creative tourism field in 2017. In this chapter, we outline the difficulties in defining creative tourism and discuss the development of creative tourism spaces on an international scale through the creation of networks and platforms. The chapter provides an overview of the research findings and comments on the patterns, issues, and trajectories we perceived. At the end of the chapter, we provide a summary of future research directions. This research was conducted as part of the CREATOUR (Creative Tourism Destination Development in Small Cities and Rural Areas) project. CREATOUR is developing an integrated approach to creative tourism by combining interdisciplinary, methodological, technical, and theoretical approaches to link the tourism and cultural/creative sectors in non-metropolitan areas of mainland Portugal. The project aims to promote a more sustainable and holistic development of rural and small city/town destinations with a strong historical and cultural past through the active and creative involvement of visitors and residents with local habits, traditions, and customs. The initiatives that are integrated within this project link creative, culture-based activities with various aspects of the 'authentic heritage" of the varied landscape of the country for the benefit of both local residents and participating visitors.

Recolher obrigatório: uma imposição da noite medieval.
1998-01-01 - Freitas, Isabel Vaz de
The medieval night is wrapped in a fear that stems from the lack of safety and the presence of delinquents who often do all kinds of dreamfull deeds. The dark hours are ideal for commiting crimes at the behest of others, for burglary and robbery. Both central power and local government are preoccupied with the insecurity of the urban population. Among other measures, they decree an obligatory curfew. After the stroke of the bell, everyone must head straight home.

Port wine and wine tourism: the touristic dimension of Douro’s landscape
2023-07-29 - Quintela, Joana A.; Freitas, Isabel Vaz de; Albuquerque, Helena
Wine tourism is one of the most important products for developing tourism in Portugal. The aim of this paper is to assess the importance of Port Wine for the tourism development of the Douro landscape, using a case study approach based on interviews with several stakeholders, through qualitative research. For this purpose, we selected a sample of respondents composed of the sector stakeholders of Port vineyards. The results allow us to ponder and highlight the importance of the PortWine culture for the region’s development, as well as to identify the economic, social, and emotional values inherent to those who work in the sector based on an identity connected to the territory. This study focuses mainly on the approach taken to wine tourism, identifying the level of investment made in this area in terms of specialized training for employees, the creation of facilities and procedures suited to the practice of this type of tourism, as well as the values of the territory and wine that should guide the development of wine tourism activities in the Port Wine region. The impacts of COVID-19 on the sector are also analyzed, classifying them into different dimensions.
