Abstract
habilitações literárias (independentemente do género).
The general objective of the present study is to evaluate the symptoms of complicated and persistent grief and the strategies of religious coping used in the face of suffering, in a sample of Portuguese adults. The sample consisted of men (n = 33) and women (n = 67) over 18 years of age who had lost a significant other for more than 12 months. Prolonged Grief Disorder (PG-13), the Brief Religious and Spiritual Coping Scale (Brief-RCOPE), and a Sociodemographic Questionnaire developed specifically for this research (collecting information on attribute variables) were used. The study points to a tendency for women to experience a more intense grief process with more severe psychopathological consequences than men. They concern the tendency towards greater psychological distress in mourning and higher prevalence of negative strategies of religious coping, in the female group and in the group with lower literacy (regardless of gender). Literacy skills work as a protective factor of loss stress and increase adjustment or adaptive capacity. The general and consistent tendency is observed for the subgroup of adults (compared to young people) to present a positive religious coping style. On the other hand, in the young there is a general and consistent tendency to present a negative religious coping style marked by deleterious feelings in an insecure and ambivalent relationship with God, showing anguish of abandonment and guilt.
