Psychologists' tobacco use, beliefs regarding smoking and professional self-efficacy: impact on clinical practices for smoking cessation
Abstract
The present research aims to analyze psychologists' tobacco use, smoking beliefs and professional self-efficacy, and to analyze the impact of these variables on clinical practices for smoking cessation. This study implied a cross-sectional design. The sample is comprised of 940 subjects, mostly female, with ages ranging from 23 to 71 years old. Recruitment was implemented through a non-probabilistic convenience sampling. The following instruments were applied: Sociodemographic, Professional and Smoking Questionnaire (Baena et al., 2018); Heaviness Smoking Index (HSI) (Heatherton et al., 1989); and The Psychologist and Counsellor Self-Efficacy (PCES) (Watt et al., 2019). Overall, the results suggest that there is a high prevalence of tobacco use among psychologists, that most psychologists do not record patients' tobacco consumption, do not advise their patients to stop smoking and do not perform clinical practices directed to smoking cessation, especially among psychologists who are smokers/ex-smokers and that smoking beliefs and perceived professional self-efficacy in this area can influence psychologists' clinical practices.
