Abstract
comunidade LGBTQIA+. Adicionalmente, a autocompaixão e a flexibilidade psicológica
Several studies have demonstrated that LGBTQIA+ people experience higher levels of stress and may become more vulnerable to psychopathology, as a result of minority stress experiences. Internalized stigma can result in LGBTQIA+ people experiencing higher levels of shame which can lead to social disconnection. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to understand the influence of internal and external shame, self-compassion and psychological flexibility on the connection to the LGBTQIA+ community. In this study, 118 people from the LGBTQIA+ population participated, with ages ranging from 18 to 65. The results revealed that people with higher levels of internal shame and selfcompassion also exhibited higher levels of connection to the LGBTQIA+ community. Moreover, self-compassion and psychological flexibility were positively related to LGBTQIA+ community connection. Lastly, self-compassion had a moderating effect on the relationship between internal shame and connection to the LGBTQIA+ community. Overall, these data suggest that these regulation strategies may be important skills for both reducing shame and promoting feelings of belonging and connection with the LGBTQIA+ community.
