There is, an advance in the establishment of Quality evaluation standards in Higher Education. Higher education institutions have undergone profound changes in the last 40 years, in particular in the Teacher Performance Evaluation. In the recent past, such as massification and democratization, were necessary and useful, although it is still necessary to anticipate structural and functional changes that increase the quality and social equity of Higher Education. In this work, the parameters resulting from pedagogical surveys in a Portuguese higher education institution in the north of the country will be presented, surveys for the 2015/2016 school year, presented to 1751 students, in a total of 11 degrees and 18 master's degrees. It is analyzed the performance of a group of 68 teachers, working full time, teachers evaluated by students. This paper presents the instruments made profitable by the students in the last three academic years, allowing the identification of the indicators regarding the qualifications and competences of the faculty in the following areas: research, teaching, university management and transfer and knowledge valorization. This paper describes the procedures resulting from the descriptive analysis (frequency analysis, descriptive measures and association measures) and inferential analysis (ANOVA one-way, MANOVA one-way, MANOVA two-way and correlation analysis) discussing the results regarding the impact of teacher performance on student satisfaction.Publicação Acesso Restrito The impact of economic globalization welfare states2024-01-01 - Dos-Santos, Maria José Palma Lampreia; Baptista, Nuno; Jesus-Silva, NatachaThe literature has yet to draw firm conclusions regarding the effect of economic globalization on government spending in developing countries in general and Pakistan in particular. This paper tries to overcome this gap on the literature and analyses the impact of globalization and democracy on the aggregate level of Pakistan's social spending from 1972 to 2018. The methods used include econometrics models. The results confirm that globalization is inversely related to social spending, while democracy positively affects social expenditures. Other results confirm that debt service and inflation rate harm social spending. In contrast, the more significant economic development and the increased unemployment rate have a positive and meaningful relationship with social expenditure in the long run. Public decision-makers should consider these conclusions to promote economic and social sustainability in Pakistan.Publicação Acesso Aberto The multiplier impact of European Union funding on Higher education and research in the Portuguese regions under HORIZON 20202019-07 - Jesus-Silva, NatachaThe objective of the European Higher Education and Research H2020 Program is to increase the number of higher education graduates and to support new PhDs in order to strengthen research, technological development and innovation. The partnership agreement between the European Union and the Member States for the implementation of the European Structural and Investment Funds (FEEI), for the period 2014-2020, the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Cohesion Fund (CF), the Fund European Social Fund (ESF), the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF), is in its final phase. It is therefore important to understand the impact on public and private investment that the partnership agreement is having in the different regions and consequently in the member countries. Support for regional investment has allowed the construction or modernization of collective infrastructures, such as schools, promotion of cultural and natural heritage, bets on energy efficiency, promotion of information and communication technologies (ICT) in public services, research and development, as well as urban rehabilitation and mobility. In this area, inter-municipal and business investments are also included. The present study analyzes the multiplier impact on regional investment of European funds made available to the Lisbon - Portugal region under the H2020 program until September 2018, in the areas of higher education and the strengthening of research. The aim is to understand whether the objectives proposed by the European Union in relation to the financial support granted by the EU/investment provided in the various regions in 1,28 are being achieved, and on the other hand, respond to the main research question: a) What is the value invested in the regional economy in the areas of higher education and research and development for each euro of support allocated by the European Union through the H2020 program in the different regions of Portugal. The entity responsible for the management of Community support has been requested to provide information on the number of projects approved, amounts invested by type of investment and their support granted by the European Union up to 30/09/2018. From the data received, the analysis was structured in relation to four main intervention areas: 1) Municipal investment; 2) Business investment; 3) Science and technology; 4) territorial approaches. In each of the areas, the data was available in order to obtain the following information: total support granted by the H2020 program, eligible investment, total investment and number of projects supported and so we can respond to the main research question.Publicação Acesso Aberto The influence of the European H2020 Programme on the development of regions: the multiplier impact of eu funding in the regions under Horizon 2020 in NUT III – Algarve – Portugal2020-07 - Ribeiro, Diamantino; Ribeiro, João; Jesus-Silva, NatachaThe partnership agreement established between the European Union and the member countries for the application of the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF), in the period between 2014 and 2020, is reaching its final phase. This study analyzes the multiplier impact on regional investment, of European funds made available for the Algarve - NUTS III region, under the H2020 program, until March 2020 and aims to answer the following questions: a) What is the amount invested in the regional economy for each euro of support allocated by the EU through the H2020 program. b) What is the percentage distribution of community support versus investment per area of intervention? 956 projects were supported which represented a total investment of 467,671,827.76 euros, having been supported with community funds in the amount of 249,966,698.38 euros, which represents a support of 53.4%, that is, for each euro support from the European Union, 1.87 euros were invested in the Algarve region. It can be concluded that, in the framework of Horizon 2020, and according to the data available until March 31, 2020, 956 projects were support. Considering that the initial objectives of the European Union foresaw support of 318,676,488.00 euros providing a global investment in the region of 437,289,055.00, that is, each euro of support should generate a regional investment of 1.37€, we can conclude that the Algarve Region has already exceeded the estimated investment value for the region by 30 million euros. We still need to apply more than 68 million EU grants.Publicação Acesso Aberto Quality in higher education: the maintenance phase of the internal quality assurance system in one Portuguese University2020-07 - Machado, Ana; Jesus-Silva, NatachaTheoretically, it is easy to enumerate the advantages of the existence of an IQAS (Internal Quality Assurance System) implemented in an accredited (Higher Education Institution) HEI. [...]Publicação Acesso Aberto EU27 Higher Education Institutions and COVID-192021-06-02 - Sobral, Sónia Rolland; Cardoso, Abílio; Jesus-Silva, Natacha; Moreira, FernandoCOVID-19 forced higher education institutions to reinvent themselves. The (usually) face-to-face education has swapped to distance contingency education. This change brought about numerous challenges that impose adjustments in several dimensions, such as pedagogical strategies and the dependence on teaching platforms and computer systems—and, above all, the new relationship between the various actors (students, teachers, and management staff). All the sudden changes, combined with uncertainty concerning what was happening, created several strategies and options. This paper has the main purpose of analyzing the scientific production on higher education of EU27 academic institutions during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in journals indexed in Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science and Elsevier’s Scopus. The sample is composed of 22 articles in total. The results show that the articles were published in 19 journals; their main focuses are Higher Education, COVID-19, and distance learning. In our database, we find several types of concerns, which shows that HEIs have a wide range of dimensions. We intend this article to be an instrument, not only to identify what was done in 2020, but to point out clues for the future.Publicação Acesso Aberto Attitudes towards consumption: The development of an operacional scale2023-05-20 - Baptista, Nuno; Dos-Santos, Maria; Mata, Fernando; Matos, Nelson; Jesus-Silva, NatachaThe western economic development, which allowed the consumer to have access to goods and services in an easy and accessible way, brought the attention of the academia and practitioners for the current mass consumption society and consumption’s role in generating happiness among consumers. However, contradictory to the contemporary way of life, some consumers have established a different current, in which anti-consumption is seen as a way to also achieve well-being, while contributing to the sustainability of the planet. [...]Publicação Acesso Aberto Impact of China-Pakistan Economic Investment on Volatility of Stock Exchanges in Pakistan and Shanghai2023-07 - Santos, Maria José Palma Lampreia dos; Jesus-Silva, NatachaThis paper aims to analyse the impact of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) on the volatility of the Pakistan Stock Exchange and Shanghai Stock Exchanges, namely, to analyse the pre and post impact of China investments in Pakistan in the energy sector on the stock exchanges of the respective countries. The methods used include an econometric analysis, namely, the GARCH model, and univariate statistical analysis, from 4th January 2010 to 2nd January 2019. The results present a significant difference in volatilities of the pre and post returns of both indices. Stock prices increased post-CPEC announcement in Pakistan, and there was a growth in the stock market. However, the mean return post-CPEC announcement is lower than Pre-announcement tenure, combined with higher volatility. This shows investor under confidence due to secrecy and non-transparent deals done under CPEC. Face to these results, we recommend a more transparent process in CPEC.Publicação Acesso Aberto The inefficiency of the Justice in Portugal: causes and consequences2018-09-12 - Jesus-Silva, NatachaGiven the breach of trust that the justice system in Portugal is facing, it is fundamental to analyse the reasons why the judicial system is considered inefficient. This study contributes to the identification of the underlying factors that contribute most to the inefficiency of justice in Portugal by analysing the frequency of the most relevant contents enunciated by the participants. The survey consists of two parts: the first consists of the following socio-demographic variables: occupation, region, age, gender and remuneration; the second consists of an open question, to which participants can state which factors contribute most to the ineffectiveness of justice in Portugal. The answers obtained were submitted to a content analysis with the aim of identifying the content underlying the inefficiency of justice in Portugal, with 18 subcategories emerging according to the contents expressed by the participants. In this way, the way above all of simplification, justice will go to what really matters: efficiency, celerity and transparency.
