In the scope of the student evaluation of teaching effectiveness at higher education, in this article they are analyzed the constituent axes and the results of satisfaction survey in a Portuguese private institution of higher education, with the purpose of measure teaching effectiveness. The quantitative study was based on pedagogical surveys, one survey for each curricular unit attended by students at one Portuguese private higher education institution. A performance evaluation of a set of 68 teachers was made, in a full-time working regime, by students. Teaching activity is evaluated according to nine items using a 7-level Likert scale, in which level 1 represents the lowest and the 7 the highest. The following characteristics were also included in the study: gender, department, years of service in the institution, professional category, academic degree, work area, number of courses taught and annual school service, in number of hours. In this work are presented the results of exploratory and inferential analysis of student’s answers to the survey applied in the year 2015-2016. Analyzes were made with the intention of verify if teacher's professional category, gender and years of service have influence on any of the items representatives of pedagogical skills. It is emphasized that whatever the semester, the professional category does not influence the pedagogical skills; gender and years of service of the teacher has no influence on the ability of the teacher to create conditions for the active participation of the students nor about the ability of the teacher to create a favorable climate for learning. This impact was evaluated for the two semesters in the 2015/2016 school year, using ANOVA one-way, MANOVA one-way and two-way parametric, correlation analysis-Pearson correlation and Reliability Analysis (Cronbach's Alpha). It is noteworthy, in the results, that the better the pedagogical skills, the better are their relationships with students. The results are discussed presenting contributions to the field of Institutional Management in Higher Education.Publication Open Access The inefficiency of the Justice in Portugal: causes and consequences2018-09-12 - Jesus-Silva, NatachaGiven the breach of trust that the justice system in Portugal is facing, it is fundamental to analyse the reasons why the judicial system is considered inefficient. This study contributes to the identification of the underlying factors that contribute most to the inefficiency of justice in Portugal by analysing the frequency of the most relevant contents enunciated by the participants. The survey consists of two parts: the first consists of the following socio-demographic variables: occupation, region, age, gender and remuneration; the second consists of an open question, to which participants can state which factors contribute most to the ineffectiveness of justice in Portugal. The answers obtained were submitted to a content analysis with the aim of identifying the content underlying the inefficiency of justice in Portugal, with 18 subcategories emerging according to the contents expressed by the participants. In this way, the way above all of simplification, justice will go to what really matters: efficiency, celerity and transparency.Publication Restricted Access Information technologies in quality management in higher education [comunicação oral]2023-09-25 - Carvalho, Liliana; Cardoso, Abílio; Jesus-Silva, NatachaThe use of Information Technologies (IT) has played an increasingly important role in quality management in higher education. This article examines the impact of IT on improving quality management processes and promoting academic excellence in higher education institutions. IT offers a range of tools and solutions that enable higher education institutions to collect, analyze, and interpret relevant data for assessing and monitoring quality in higher education. Through learning management systems, online assessment platforms, and data analysis software, institutions can obtain accurate and real-time insights into student performance, teaching effectiveness, and student satisfaction. Furthermore, IT enables the implementation of quality management systems based on international standards, such as ISO 9001:2015, providing a structured framework for continuous improvement in higher education processes. These systems can facilitate the documentation of policies and procedures, the monitoring of performance indicators, and the conduct of internal and external audits, contributing to quality assurance and compliance with established standards. IT also plays a crucial role in communication and collaboration among the various stakeholders involved in quality management in higher education. Through online portals and platforms, students, faculty, administrators, and staff can share information, exchange feedback, and participate in decision-making processes, promoting a more participatory and transparent approach to quality management. However, it is important to emphasize that the effective implementation of IT in quality management requires a strategic approach and an institutional culture supportive of innovation. Higher education institutions must invest in suitable technological infrastructure, provide training and support to users, and ensure data security and privacy. IT plays a fundamental role in quality management in higher education by providing tools and solutions that contribute to the improvement of higher education processes, compliance with international standards, and effective communication among takeholders. The strategic adoption of IT can drive academic excellence and student satisfaction, fostering a culture of quality in higher education institutions.Publication Open Access The Influence of the European H2020 Program on the Development of Regions: The Multiplier Impact of EU Funding in the Regions under Horizon 2020 in NUT III - North The multiplier impact of EU funding in the regions under Horizon 2020 in NUT III - North Portugal2019-07 - Ribeiro, Diamantino; Jesus-Silva, NatachaPublication Open Access A systematic review for urban regeneration effects analysis in urban cores2020-09 - Tiboni, Michela; Botticini, Francesco; Sousa, Sílvia; Jesus-Silva, NatachaIn this article, we aim to promote a methodology to analyze the effects of urban regeneration in historical sites. Different case studies are observed in depth, and they allow us to understand certain aspects concerning ex-post and ex-ante assessments. This methodology, which is supported by Geographic Information System (GIS) software and an online database, is based on different phases: the first is the quantification of the resources employed within the process, giving attention to the policies that are the basis for social and environmental changes. Then, the analysis moves to the effects of the interventions. In particular, the goal of the methodology was to understand how different urban operations can contribute to creating public value, and importance was given to the available tools for public bodies to develop partnerships and to capture that value. With the ex-post assessment, it was feasible to compare the situations before and after the realization of the projects, whereas, with the ex-ante assessment, it was viable to assess different possible development scenarios and compare them with the baseline of the current situation. The methodology was tested for the ex-post assessment case study of the city of Porto (PT) and for the ex-ante assessment case study of the city of Brescia (IT).Publication Open Access Quality in higher education: analysis and discussion of evaluative standards internal consistency2016 - Medeiros, A. A Portuguese Overview2016-12 - Bessa-Vilela, Noémia; Jesus-Silva, Natacha; Caramelo-Gomes, JoséDue to the increasing competition on the labour market, the search for new approaches to labour legislations led to the creation and adoption, in some countries, of so called “flexicurity”. “Flexicurity” became top of the list in the policy agenda in the European Union, but there is doubt that such an agenda for encompassing labour market reform providing not employment. As sources are used “flexicurity” models, in countries where it has already been successfully implemented, as well as Eurostat data, information made available by the European Commission, as well as doctrinal and research papers. Portuguese jurisdiction is considered by national legal doctrine as a closed model. Heavy regulation and constitutional constraints drive an almost unanimous rejection of the possibility to introduce the concept at national level. This article's goal is to discuss the ways the concept could be introduced in the Portuguese jurisdiction. Would the model effectively create security, or would it result in precarity?Publication Open Access The multiplier impact of European Union funding on Higher education and research in the Portuguese regions under HORIZON 20202019-07 - Jesus-Silva, NatachaThe objective of the European Higher Education and Research H2020 Program is to increase the number of higher education graduates and to support new PhDs in order to strengthen research, technological development and innovation. The partnership agreement between the European Union and the Member States for the implementation of the European Structural and Investment Funds (FEEI), for the period 2014-2020, the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Cohesion Fund (CF), the Fund European Social Fund (ESF), the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF), is in its final phase. It is therefore important to understand the impact on public and private investment that the partnership agreement is having in the different regions and consequently in the member countries. Support for regional investment has allowed the construction or modernization of collective infrastructures, such as schools, promotion of cultural and natural heritage, bets on energy efficiency, promotion of information and communication technologies (ICT) in public services, research and development, as well as urban rehabilitation and mobility. In this area, inter-municipal and business investments are also included. The present study analyzes the multiplier impact on regional investment of European funds made available to the Lisbon - Portugal region under the H2020 program until September 2018, in the areas of higher education and the strengthening of research. The aim is to understand whether the objectives proposed by the European Union in relation to the financial support granted by the EU/investment provided in the various regions in 1,28 are being achieved, and on the other hand, respond to the main research question: a) What is the value invested in the regional economy in the areas of higher education and research and development for each euro of support allocated by the European Union through the H2020 program in the different regions of Portugal. The entity responsible for the management of Community support has been requested to provide information on the number of projects approved, amounts invested by type of investment and their support granted by the European Union up to 30/09/2018. From the data received, the analysis was structured in relation to four main intervention areas: 1) Municipal investment; 2) Business investment; 3) Science and technology; 4) territorial approaches. In each of the areas, the data was available in order to obtain the following information: total support granted by the H2020 program, eligible investment, total investment and number of projects supported and so we can respond to the main research question.Publication Open Access Evaluation of teaching performance in Higher Education: Students perspectives and teaching management indicators2017 - Costa-Lobo, Cristina; Santos-Pereira, Carla; Jesus-Silva, Natacha; Durão, NatérciaThis study is part of a research project whose main objective is to identify, select, evaluate and synthesize the available evidence on Quality Indicators in Higher Education.
