Abstract
This project compiles the few existing published information concerning the conservation and restoration of pipe organs, a field of expertise yet to be “recognised” and one that is currently lacking proper in-depth research. This case study proceeds to delineate and define the organ-master’s role and the specificities inherent to his area of intervention. Furthermore, the study on the pipe organ of Santa Catarina church in Lisbon presents a parallel between the Iberian pipe organ and the historical Portuguese pipe organ, marking their similarities as well as their main differentiative features. The clear distinction between the two types of pipe organs is currently not well defined, probably due to the scarcity of proper research in this area. In turn, this has led to misguided interventions carried out in Portugal by having a negative impact namely on the distortion of the intrument’s audio essence. The cultural development program aims to bring back a pipe organ that has been disassembled for nearly 18 years and whose sound has been long time forgotten, an action which is undoubtedly a crucial factor for the instrument’s valorisation, alongside with future promotion actions and further publications. This is an integrated and comprehensive plan between the instrument, the church, tourism, musical pedagogy and artistic education.
