Abstract
In this research it is assumed as fundamental theoretical hypothesis that the marital, psychosexual, development encompasses a complex process of romantic disengagement, and that the adoption of swing lifestyle consists in a deep redefinition of the marital alliance that may play a compensatory role. Being a culturally counter-hegemonic behavior, breaking the sexual norm of monogamous marriage and, thereby, involving the change of attitudes and relational structures, it has intense psychological effects. This research sought to understand how couples assume the swinging lifestyle and assess its impact on their marital experience and sexuality, comparing swinger (SW) and non-swinger (NSW) couples. The sample, collected in a non-probabilistic manner, consists of 51 couples (n=102 subjects) in heterosexual relationships, including 12 SW couples and 39 NSW couples. The study included two phases: a first phase, with ethnographic visits to swing clubs, and a second phase, where a “explanatory sequential design” was comprised, involving questionnaires administration (Sternberg Triangular Love Scale, Klein Sexual Orientation Grid, Self Esteem and Relationship Questionnaire, Sexual Attitudes Scale, Romantic Attachment Questionnaire and some facets of the NEO PI-R) and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that SW had, compared with the NSW, more love, more fluidity in sexual orientation, more sexual satisfaction, more permissiveness, communion, impersonal sexual practices and instrumentality and also greater openness to experience. Significant gender differences in each group (SW and NSW) and correlations of sexual satisfaction and love with biopsychosexual variables in SW and NSW were also found. It was concluded that the NSW were more conservative and guided by the monogamous normativity. Moreover, it was found that SW couples were more hedonist and have non- normative behaviors, breaking with the current scripts with psychosexual benefits. Finally, some limitations and contributions of this research are discussed, and some recommendations for future studies are suggested.
