Abstract
exclusivos do mundo digital.
The digital era has transformed the way we live, work, and interact with technology. As our dependence on digital devices and platforms has grown, so has our exposure to a range of unique digital world stressors. In an effort to capture this contemporary phenomenon of stress associated with constant use of mobile and digital devices, Coyle et al. (2023) developed the Digital Stress Scale. The main objective of this study is to validate a new Digital Stress assessment instrument in a sample of university students. Specifically, the aim is to analyze its factor structure and psychometric properties, as well as explore its relationship with other measures of perceived stress, generalized anxiety symptoms, and perceived quality of life. The sample consists of 160 university students aged between 18 and 56 years old (M = 22.59; SD = 5.24). The results of the Exploratory Factor Analysis show a four-factor structure, as theoretically postulated by the authors, namely: approval anxiety, availability stress, fear of missing out, and information overload. These dimensions exhibit adequate internal consistency (> .47). The scale demonstrated good test-retest reliability over a three-week interval. The dimensions of digital stress show positive correlations with perceived stress and generalized anxiety symptoms, and negative correlations with quality of life. Additionally, individuals with severe levels of generalized anxiety tend to report higher levels of digital stress compared to individuals with mild to moderate levels of generalized anxiety. In conclusion, these results suggest that the Digital Stress Scale is a robust and reliable instrument that allows for the assessment of the multidimensional nature of digital stress, which can contribute to an understanding of the phenomenon and its impact in the current context of digital social connection.
