Abstract
a saúde mental.
The literature highlights the impact of various proximal and distal factors on the mental health of sexual and gender minorities (SGM). Additionally, research demonstrates the harmful role of shame and self-criticism on the mental health of different populations. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to investigate the mediating role of self-criticism in the relationship between sexual orientation-related shame and mental health in SGM. A quantitative, cross-sectional, non-experimental methodology was adopted. The study sample consisted of 118 participants, including 81 women and 37 men, with 88 identifying as cisgender and 20 as non-binary, 93 Portuguese, and 24 Brazilian. The results indicated that participants with high levels of self-criticism and external shame related to sexual orientation had worse mental health, while internal shame was not significantly associated with mental health. The mediation analysis revealed that only the inadequate self significantly mediated the relationship between external shame and mental health. This study underscores the importance of assessing different forms of shame and self-criticism, as well as promoting therapeutic interventions focused on reducing self-criticism and external shame to improve the mental health of this population.
