Abstract
questões: (1) Qual a organização do Projeto Ritmus?
docentes.
The school failure, particularly in the subject of mathematics, is a reality for many students, parents and teachers who try every day to solve this problem and to make their students able to reach the goals set by the ministerial plan. One school in the country opted to make a project, called Ritmus, with the main purpose to fight school failure while maintaining the quality of education. One of the key features of this project is the organization of classes with students who have the same learning rhythm and the possibility for students to change their class according to the achieved results and attitude. This project also allows teachers to have weekly meetings in order to cooperate in the planning of strategies and implementation of activities. This study is intended to know, analyze and understand the Ritmus Project, because it is important to investigate possible strategies that encourage student’s success in mathematics and the professional development of teachers. With this goal, we intend to give answer to the following questions: (1) What is the Ritmus Project structure? Which difficulties have been encountered in its implementation? (2) Which strategies were implemented under the Ritmus Project to stimulate student’s success in mathematics? (3) Which work dynamic was implemented by mathematics teachers under the Ritmus Project? (4) Which factors can be identified as enhancers or inhibitors of the student’s success and the professional development of teachers?. Since this study is based on the questions listed above, we chose to apply the qualitative methodology, particular a case study, since this research is based on the analysis of a project which is developed in only one school in the country. In order to obtain the answers to the study questions, we have collected data through questionnaires (applied to all seventh grade students, who participated in this project, to parents and teachers), interviews (made to mathematics teachers and to the President of the Provisional Administrative Committee), observing meetings and document analysis. This study shows that the Ritmus Project is, according to students, parents and teachers, an enhancer of success, particularly in mathematics, and allows the professional development of teachers. Two of the project features reported as enhancers of student’s success are, classes with students with the same learning rhythm and advisory services. Also, the teachers who answered to the survey and the ones who were submitted to interviews, share the opinion that, the Ritmus Project promotes the Professional Development of Teachers, as it allows for a joint and systematic work, that is, provides collaborative work between teachers.
