Abstract
The present dissertation aims to explore the impact of psychological flexibility on adolescents' aggressive behaviors, as well as whether this impact is mediated by automatic thoughts. It will also investigate whether the explanatory model of aggressive behavior is applicable for both sexes. The sample consisted of 155 participants from two schools in the north of the country, aged between 12 and 16 years of age (M = 13.3; SD = 1.07), with 58.1% being female. They responded to a protocol consisting of a sociodemographic questionnaire, and self-report questionnaires that assessed aggressive behavior and practice, psychological inflexibility and the frequency of automatic thoughts. The results obtained show that the impact of psychological flexibility on aggressive behaviors is entirely mediated by the presence of maladaptive automatic thoughts: higher levels of psychological inflexibility predict these thoughts, which in turn predict the adoption of aggressive behaviors. Total variance of this moment was obtained between sexes, at the configurational and metric level, and partial invariance at the intercepts level: the model is applicable to the explanation of the practice of aggressive behavior by boys and girls, although there are differences in the intensity with which the variables are expressed by sex. Females show higher levels of psychological inflexibility, while males show greater practice of aggressive behavior in the overt and reputational ways, and greater hostility in terms of automatic thoughts. Variables external to the study may have been reflected in the results obtained. The study contributed to theoretically explain the analyzed constructs, in adolescence, and may be a motivation for the development of psychological assessment and intervention instruments, aimed at this target population.
