Abstract
In an environment of crisis in democracy, populism has gained strength and, presenting itself as the key to overcoming social ills, is gaining adherents day after day. This phenomenon, not without reason, is related to extremism and often triggers the weakening of the rule of law, political pluralism, and political and civil rights, raising the question of whether this populist wave could coexist with social movements, without compromising risk plurality, isonomy, and the rule of law. In this scenario, neopopulism daily threatens democratic institutions, be it justice, traditional political parties, the free press, among others, whether through aggressive criticism and without scientific basis, or even using known false information, the so-called fake news. Indeed, it is argued that democracy has institutional tools capable of stopping (or reducing) this reactionary wave.
