Abstract
Career development begins in childhood under personal and contextual influences, impacting on academic and psychosocial processes. The family has an important role model in relation to family dynamics and the expression of work experiences and emotions in development of representations of future work. According to the need to deepen knowledge about the role of emotions in development of career process in childhood and contributing to their psychological evaluation, this study offers a first contribution to investigate the psychometric properties of Work Valences Scale (WVS) with portuguese children. The sample was composed by 201 participants (40.80% boys and 59,20% girls) attended the fifth grade (Mage = 10.04, SD = 0.48). After translation, back-translation and pilot management of WVS, the scale was answered by the participants, in the classroom context group. The results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) suggested that the hierarchical model of work valences was fitted to the data. A good internal consistency was obtained for the first and second order factors. Non-parametric tests indicated a positive association between work valences and involvement in school, and are still geared toward to higher valences in girls than boys. The WVS can be applied in future studies, using a larger and more representative sample to test this important issue. Future research could test the psychometric properties of WVS with adults and crossing parents’ work valences with children’s work valences too. This measure can be useful in the psychological assessment of career development in childhood and in the study of the role of emotions in that process.
