Abstract
This present study aims to explore the applicability of the conceptualization of innovation moments and to assess therapeutic change, as manifested in results and in the psychotherapeutic process, in the context of an ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) intervention applied to adolescents with social anxiety disorder. Four female adolescents, aged between 15 and 17, were considered, evenly divided into two groups, one with greater change and one with lesser change. To evaluate therapeutic outcomes, the Core Social Fears Scale, a self-report instrument for symptoms of social anxiety, was used to assess the degree of discomfort and avoidance related to three central fears: observation, performance, and interaction. To examine the therapeutic process, moments of innovation from all intervention sessions for each case were coded using the Innovation Moments Classification System. The results confirmed the applicability of this system to these cases, suggesting its relevance across different age groups and intervention models. Furthermore, in terms of symptomatology, even though the inter-group and intra-group differences were not significant, there was a decrease in symptoms from pre- to post-intervention in both groups. Regarding the results of the proportions of Innovation Moments (MIs), they indicated higher proportions in the group with greater change compared to the group with lesser change. The results suggest a positive association between the change in the fear of performance and the proportion of Level 1 MIs. In conclusion, it is evident that Moments of Innovation can be identified in adolescents, especially in groups undergoing significant change. This suggests that not only therapeutic outcomes in interventions with adolescents should be considered but also the therapeutic process.
