Abstract
escolar.
Estes resultados destacam a natureza complexa e inter-geracional dos efeitos
do stress traumático.
Parental involvement on school activities is a known important aspect to promote children school achievement, however there is lack of research on parent’s difficulties that may explain why some parents fail to provide the support that children need. Several adverse conditions may contribute to limit parental involvement, specifically, traumatic stress symptoms. This study aims to verify the nature of the correlations between traumatic stress symptoms and parental school involvement. Participated in this study seventy-four parents, fifty-four mothers (74%) and nineteen fathers (26%), aged between 24 and 50 years (M=38.32, SD=6.19), from schools at Penafiel municipality, northern Portugal, who responded to the questionnaire of Parental Involvement in School - Parent Version (QEPE-VPa), this instrument measures parental involvement in school activities and volunteering, parental involvement in learning activities at home, school-family communication, involvement in activities at school and participation in parents meetings; and the Impact of Event Scale - Revised (IES-R), to measure traumatic stress symptoms. The main result reveals a significant negative correlation (r= -.567) between Traumatic Stress and overall Parental Involvement. Other correlations between instruments sub-scales are also negative. On the linear regression (enter method) with all know important variables to predict parental involvement we included IES-R results as an hypothetic predictor. We find that traumatic stress symptoms are significant predictors even when compared with others, as gender and parental education. The model with those three variables predicts 83.2% of School Parental Involvement. These results highlight the complexity and inter-generational nature of traumatic stress effects. Also, it considers parents traumatic stress as an important target on School Involvement programs, particularly on highly traumatized communities. There is need to raise awareness of this issue on educational community. Results are discussed considering limitations, future plans and implications to practice.
