MorSpeech: Empowering Speech/Motor Impaired People Through an Interactive Morse Code Learning System

dc.description.abstractCommunication is a fundamental human right, yet individuals with speech and motor impairments often face challenges in expressing themselves. This paper introduces MorSpeech, a mobile application prototype designed to empower these individuals by providing an alternative communication system. MorSpeech builds upon the DesignABILITY framework to create inclusive tools, ensuring accessibility for users with varying abilities. The prototype utilizes a Flutter-based mobile app that interfaces with Arduino-like hardware to enable diverse input methods. This flexibility caters to users with a range of motor limitations. Initial user testing, conducted with a person diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), revealed the importance of addressing visual impairments alongside speech and motor limitations. In response, the design was refined to incorporate multiple feedback mechanisms, including audio cues, ensuring usability for individuals with broader disabilities. MorSpeech goes beyond simply teaching Morse code. It aspires to be a complete communication system, seamlessly translating user-generated Morse code into text and speech output. This functionality empowers users to engage in meaningful communication through a system they can control despite their physical limitations. The potential impacts of MorSpeech are significant. It has the potential to enhance communication, promote independence and user empowerment, and foster greater accessibility and social inclusion for individuals with disabilities.
