ADHD and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders): Comorbidity and differential diagnosis
Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and ADHD are related in several ways. They share some symptoms and having one of those conditions increases the risk of having the other. Diagnoses of both disorders are based on behavioral symptoms. ASD are characterized by qualitative alterations in social interaction, communication and a pattern of restricted and repetitive behaviors; On the other hand, ADHD is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and / or hyperactivityimpulsivity. People diagnosed with ASD manifest a unique combination of behaviors that commonly involve impulsivity, aggression, and hyperactivity that accompany the classic symptoms of these entities. Very often we find that patients with a diagnosis of ADHD present a similar symptomatology to those with ASD and reverse, so that the differentiation between the two diagnostic groups becomes difficult. In this chapter, we will present the specificities of ASD and differential diagnosis with ADHD.
