Abstract
metidos a entrevistas.
The stereotype around the librarian career is well familiar in popular culture. Predominant in it is a feminine image of glasses, bun, formal clothes, serious-looking or provocative, but above all, characterized by the onomatopoeic expression "Shhh." This stereotype, sometimes negative in nature, can be the basis of devaluation and lack of professional recognition by society that ignores the functions performed by the infor- mation professional in the library. But, particularly, can be representative of a weak professional achievement by the librarian, who doesn't see their valences recognized. Thus, this dissertation seeks to show the main characteristics of librarians who perform functions in Public Libraries in Portugal, and publicize a new facet of the profession, as well as understanding the real self-image and social of librarians and their relationship with stereotypes outlined by current society. For the methodological approach, to better understand, explore and describe the phenomenon, it was opted for a methodology of quantitative investigation based on questionaire surveys, followed by semi-structured interviews to complement and deepen the data obtained in the survey. The sample taken from surveys consisted of 194 professionals of public libraries, of which only 10, from different areas of the na- tional territory, were subjected to interviews. The study concluded that the dynamism and potential of the new local libraries have been changing the image of their own professional of information who feels less associated with the stereotype of "book- worm", being given him/her new roles in society. However, still feeling misunderstood by a society that scarcely attends the library places and therefore unaware of their functions and roles, the librarians appeal and defend the union of the class to help create a more adjusted image of the profession and libraries.
